No, this is not from the Onion.
When the Gastonguay family sailed away from America in May, they believed they were leaving behind a government that supports taxes, abortion, and homosexuality. You see, theyre the kind of Christians who feel persecuted because the government wont adhere to Biblical law that supposedly outlaws gays and bans a womans right to choose. They are also convinced that government controls the churches because being gay and choosing to have an abortion arent illegal. So they left the United States in protest and set course for the island of Kiribati, which is between Hawaii and Australia. The family took a leap of faith and believed God would answer their prayers to take them to a land where they can practice their extreme and hateful religious beliefs. Well, God responded and it was epic.
The Gastonguay family swiftly got lost at sea and remained that way for 91 days. During that period of time, their vessel was battered again and again by squalls and storms. The only food they had left consisted of honey and juice.

(8,028 posts)As for homosexuality and abortion, both are protected by the Constitution. The Constitution, which unlike the Bible is the true law of the land in America, protects the equal rights of all people, even a gay persons right to get married and be treated fairly. It also protects womens privacy and personal liberty, thus protecting the right to choose. Also, if the Gastonguays actually paid attention, they would know that churches arent controlled by the state due to the fact that there is a wall of separation between the two. Churches arent taxed either.
To be sure, the Gastonguay family had a long and eventful journey. But their story makes one wonder why more conservative Christians arent following their lead. Surely they would enjoy living in other nations such as Russia, where gays are outlawed. Or Somalia, where government is powerless and guns are everywhere. Or perhaps theyd be much happier in Iran, where women are oppressed and there is a state religion. Or maybe even North Korea, where the poor starve and massive military budgets are the norm.
See a pattern? All of these nations have values that run contrary to our constitutional ideals but fall in line with the ideals of the extremist conservatives of today. America would more than likely be much better off if conservatives sailed away like the Gastonguays to places where they can feel right at home oppressing people and forcing their beliefs on others. Then they can stop bitching about taxes, gays, and womens rights, and the rest of us can get on with moving this country forward.

(17,064 posts)Obviously they didn't prepare their boat well, nor did they bother to learn to navigate. Also, Kiribati lies near the Equator, in the doldrums where light winds and frequent squalls are common. It also lies off the beaten path, so they needed to prepare to be on their own...they were extremely lucky a vessel happened to pass through the area and spot them. Also, Kiribati is a coral atoll. Not much there to live on but coconuts and fish...and I'm not sure the fish are even safe to eat. I have no idea how they planned to survive. If they planned to live off the land, they would have starved. Hopefully they won't endanger their children with another misadventure....but they likely will.

(22,651 posts)Not sure of the costs of a decent sailing craft. Maybe 100k for a cheaper boat? and the boat slip in San D., I bet the rent was 2-3k a month.
Sounds like the 'leaders' the man of the family? big idea. They probably couldn't afford the boat slip anymore.
I'm surprised 'God' told the man to set out to sea instead of get a job and support the 2 woman and 2 babies.
sounds like a mini-cult.

(17,064 posts)I don't know what boat prices in SoCal are like, but in Fla a pretty decent boat could be bought for 20-30K, but it would cost another 20-30 to prepare it for a voyage like that, not including provisions. It would still be pretty cramped for 6 people for months on end.

(17,064 posts)People with some grasp of reality would start out on short cruises, to break the kids in gently (and get the parents some experience handling tbe boat and learning to navigate). Then as the family gets used to it, expand the horizon bit by bit. Buying a boat and taking off to the middle of the Pacific completely unprepared for the journey is a recipe for failure. No one in their right mind would introduce their kids to hiking by undertaking a Mt Everest climb, or crossing a desert. Somehow, when it comes to boats, people completely lose their minds. Its not rocket science, but it does take some time to learn the necessary skills and get some experience.

(14 posts)Seriously, in an interview with a Christian radio program, the father said they're planning on buying another boat and making ANOTHER attempt. I sure hope they've paid back the $10,000 the U.S. Embassy and State Department spent rescuing and flying them back here, since they're so anti-government and all.
