The New York Times ran an interview Tuesday between journalist Peter Maass and former government contractor Edward Snowden that was conducted through an encrypted question-and-answer session. Maass communicated with Snowden while reporting on a profile of Laura Poitras, the documentarian who helped Snowden disclose the details of the top secret National Security Agency surveillance programs.
Poitras served as an intermediary for the interview, which touched on Snowden's early interactions with the filmmaker and The Guardian's Glenn Greenwald. The former government contractor told Maass that he believes Poitras and Greenwald were "annoyed" after discovering how young he is when the three met in June in Hong Kong.
I think they were annoyed that I was younger than they expected, and I was annoyed they had arrived too early, which complicated the initial verification. As soon as we were behind close doors, however, I think everyone was reassured by the obsessive attention to precaution and bona fides. I was particularly impressed by Glenns ability to operate without sleep for days at a time.

(36,418 posts)tells me that this story may be the most important insight yet into the real motives of those involved, and that the bashers have nothing substantial to offer in response.

(135,425 posts)E.S.: Yes and no. I know journalists are busy and had assumed being taken seriously would be a challenge, especially given the paucity of detail I could initially offer. At the same time, this is 2013, and a journalist who regularly reported on the concentration and excess of state power. I was surprised to realize that there were people in news organizations who didnt recognize any unencrypted message sent over the Internet is being delivered to every intelligence service in the world. In the wake of this years disclosures, it should be clear that unencrypted journalist-source communication is unforgivably reckless.

I think that's kind of important, that whole "...any unencrypted message sent over the Internet is being delivered to every intelligence service in the world."
"He also said GG should have known that 'All his emails belong to government!' EVERY government!"
...there's that focus again. Reminds me of this comment:

Cheers!
