In the first of an upcoming series of 20 policy speeches, Hillary Clinton took aim at the 80-plus bills introduced in various states in the wake of the Supreme Court decision that gutted the Voter Rights Act.
“We’ve seen an unseemly rush by previously-covered jurisdictions to enact or enforce laws that will make it harder for millions of our fellow Americans to vote,” the former secretary of state said at the American Bar Association convention in San Francisco, California.
Specifically, Clinton called out a recent voter-identification law in Texas, Florida’s attempt to renew its purge of voting rolls and North Carolina’s massively restrictive set of voting guidelines, which she said “reads like the greatest hits of voter suppression.”
“Not every obstacle is related to race, but anyone who says that racial discrimination is no longer a problem in American elections must not be paying attention,” Clinton said. “Despite the best efforts of many well-intentioned elections officials, discrepancies and resources across precincts and polling stations still disproportionately impact African-Americans, Latino and young voters.”
