OpenCarry gun nuts and Joe FRIDAY
So in news from Texas in the past couple of weeks, agitating gun nuts have been touring the state “educating” the local police and public about their right to open carry “long arms” (“ 'Rifles',” they say, “to you Liberals"
, informing cops ahead of time that they will be walking a neighborhood or will be wanting to take a picture of themselves in front of the police station with a rifle strapped at the shoulder. Mostly they are allowed to do so and are on their way. Sometimes they are denied by cops caught unawares and this sets them off to summon their network of hundreds of gun nuts to show up to demonstrate, sometimes, when arrested, to file a lawsuit because their RIGHTS have been DENIED. Smacks of a lawsuit scam.
So one of them got arrested last week, then was given a Roman Triumph the next day on radio wingnut talk shows. And the arrested dude sounded like SUCH a “nice” dude, SO well spoken and polite, as were the hosts and callers. All he wants is to EDUCATE everybody about everybody’s particular right to open carry rifles almost everywhere, and above all that everybody should see an ARMED DUDE and not automatically assume he’s a BAD dude, that it should be NORMAL to see armed dudes wherever, like the Utah dude last year with an assault rifle strapped on his shoulder in a J.C. Penny, aw shucks.
It was all strictly framed as a 2nd Amendment topic, not that these particular gun nuts are using the 2nd Amendment as a front for other political agendas, such as Libertarianism, Ron PAUL, doomsday preppers, food additive paranoia, secede/Texas, militias, radio radical Alex JONES, Open-Carry-TX, Don’t-Comply, Come-and-Take-It, et al. And no mention that there is a CLEAR pattern in the Constitution of civilian dominance over weaponizing -- the civilians commanding the military; no troops in HOMES (implying NOT among the non-military citizens); and the purpose of weapons being for a WELL REGULATED MILITIA.
One fly in the soup was one irate caller who would NOT “discuss” civilly, who told them it’s not whether they CAN but whether they SHOULD.
So the exasperated host posed the questions, “Why CAN’T we get along? Why not PLEASANT discourse? Why not take adversaries at their own best word about themselves?”
Well, HITLER loved dogs and LIMBOsevic loves Christmas, and all the rest of everybody loves something or other.
When I see a political adversary, it is not the smiling face I am looking at. It’s what [FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: yellow"]the vision of the ultimate outcomes of their policies[/FONT] would look like: This is what they [FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: yellow"]STAND FOR[/FONT].

So in pictures of the guns/Libertarian/Secede rally, yeah, a bunch of them were smiling and looking like “nice” good ol’boys (and THOSE have SELDOM been “good”), and in a YouTube some of them waving flags and jumping up and down LIKE APES (although I love apes) at passing traffic, but sprinkled in their midst there were the tell tale ones who didn’t care about being good actors, grimacing with DETERMINATION, CONVICTION, and HATE, a scowlingly tough frontierswoman here and frontiersman there.
I saw a KKK parade/march once, in the ‘60s, on one of my parents’ visits when I was in college: We went, as we always did, to the old cafeteria downtown, and there was a big crowd on the sidewalks, and the reason for it was a parade/demonstration of the KKK up the middle of the main street. They were in their robes with the peaked caps but with the open-face (no masks). At that time, the KKK was the maximum of scariness. We never dreamed that eventually (TODAY) there would be all manner of Nazis, skinheads, doomsday preppers, Libertarians, secessionists, whatever brand of Tuff-Talking-JERKS, et al. So after one stunned look we went inside and settled in. Then the line got filled with all these people who were some kind of a group, the women all dressed in gingham blue checked dresses. The first thought was that it was a square dancing club, but then it dawned on us that it was the KKK people after their parade. So the dining area was half sprinkled with blue checked gingham, and what has been scarier ever since, the males in white robes or the women in blue checkered gingham?
