Kal Penn? You Racist, Bro?

http://thisweekinblackness.com/2013/08/14/kal-penn-you-racist-bro/

No. No. NO. Stop and Frisk is a racist and decidedly humiliating policy that countenances stopping brown folks for no other reason than the fact that they’re brown. It’s a policy born of fear and scare tactics that Mayor Bloomberg has vociferously promulgated, facts and logic be damned (as the Gothamist aptly points out in this article, “Six Bogus Things Bloomberg Said About Stop and Frisk”.)
...
Not only is stop and frisk inane, it has the added benefit of violating the Constitution, as Judge Shira A. Scheindlin ruled earlier this week. Also? The claim that blacks and Latinos are victim of the most crimes and commit the most crimes has been debunked again and again and again.

Black on Black crime is a myth. It’s not a thing. It’s false. A lie. Or, at least, if it is a thing, then so is white on white crime, but no one ever talks about that, because it’s easier to believe that black folks are inherently violent so that when communities of color try to have a discussion about racism in the justice system, people who would rather ignore gross injustices can point fingers and yell, “BLACK ON BLACK CRIME” to shut down any discussion about the school-to-prison pipeline or policies in this country that lead to black folks being locked up at higher rates than white folks (or gunned down without recourse, *ahem*.)

One would think that Kal Penn, a man who has been the victim of and spoken out against racial profiling would understand that policymakers like Michael Bloomberg make shit up to justify racist and ineffective policies out of fear. Racist and ineffective policies like, I don’t know, the racial profiling of Muslims, or anyone who might look Muslim like, for example, Indian-Americans.

"The claim that blacks and Latinos are victim of the most crimes and commit the most crimes has been debunked again and again and again. "

Well, yes, of course it has - 80% of the population is white, so of course most criminals and most victims are white.

But the claim that actually gets made, and is entirely true, is that black people commit and are the victims of more crimes *per capita* (by a significant fraction).

So what he says is technically correct, but it's utterly misleading.

they tend to be made up of people that are black or hispanic. Poor areas tend to be higher crime areas (because if you have money you move from there to 'safer' neighborhoods)

Because those areas are higher crime areas, and are predominately black and Hispanic, of course 'black on black' crime will be high.

In areas that are predominately 'poor white' areas, the crimes there will be predominately 'white on white'.

Now if I saw a white guy in a predominately black/Hispanic area it might set off alarm bells that he is there for less than legal reasons (is the area a known drug area or where prostitutes hang out? that guy might be there for that).

I think that we have to look at a few things
1) why are these areas staying so low on the socioeconomic scale, and what can we do to lift the community up
2) how can we best reduce crime in this area? especially violent crimes such as muggings, assault, home invasions. Stop and Frisk can be a great tool in reducing this, but as was stated by Judge Scheindlin it has to be for more that being stopped for being black/Hispanic. For example the wearing of gang colors/tattoos, etc that may indicate that they are a problem source.
3) additional training for police to help them learn what is a good stop and frisk and what isn't

Wikipedia: "On April 8, 2009, it was announced that Penn would join the Obama administration as an Associate Director in the White House Office of Public Engagement.[1] This necessitated that his character Lawrence Kutner be written out of the TV series House.[1][2] Penn resigned his post as Barack Obama's associate director of public engagement on June 1, 2010, for a brief return to his acting career.[3]"
