(58,598 posts)the ultimate civil rights issue. For me, it was never about unborn babies, but about controlling women's sexual conduct to conform to arbitrary Puritanical rules. They want to ensure this by denying women any protection from any consequence that they declare to be 'controlled by God.' Their latest push to even make pregnancies from rape some kind of sacred God-given gift is particularly disgusting.

(83,654 posts)When Romney aligned himself with Ryan and the militant, absolutist Republican majority in Congress, he signed up to oppose all abortions without exceptioneven if a womans life is at risk or a pregnancy is the result of rape or incest. Thousands of women all over the country who now can legally end a pregnancy caused by rape would instead be forced to carry the child to term. In most states, that means submitting to the rapist-fathers assertion of paternal rights regarding visitation, religion, education, health care and countless other issues. And this week, the GOP convention will adopt a platform endorsing the no-exceptions abortion plank. Welcome to the GOPs shocking approach to womens rights.
It turns out that in 31 states, a woman who carries a rape pregnancy to term has no effective way to block the rapist from asserting his paternal rights over the child he forced on her. In those 31 states, it is not unusual for a rapist to assert his parental rights over his victims rape-child, according to lawyer Shauna Prewitt, who wrote a 2010 article about it in the Georgetown Law Journal. The mother will be at risk of spending decades co-parenting with her rapist and encountering him at family events for the rest of their lifetimes. The stakes are enormous for the estimated 25,000 to 32,000 girls and women impregnated by rape each year.

(26,598 posts)We can never go back.
I remember 1963. I turned 16 one week after President Kennedy was assassinated. One of my friends was pregnant, raped by her brother.. how disgusting. We scraped $150 together, 5 of us. Don't know how, it was a fortune then and none of us had anything. We took her to a "nurse" who butchered her, then we took her to one girl's sister, a real RN, who patched her up. My friend survived to live a happy life.
When people say abortion is murder, I say no, back ally abortions are murder. Secrets are murder. Silence is murder.
No one has the right to force a woman to stay pregnant against her will and men should have no voice in this matter.

(83,654 posts)You are right.
I am happy that your friend survived. You are remarkable for coming up with the money to save her. I am so very sorry that you had to go through that.
We need change. We have to stand up and say no more!
