The death toll from Egypts bloody crackdown on supporters of the deposed president, Mohamed Morsi, soared beyond 500 across the land on Thursday with more than 3,700 people injured, the Health Ministry said, in a further sign of the extent and the ferocity of Wednesdays scorched-earth assault by security forces to raze two pro-Morsi protest camps in Cairo.
Despite the growing tally of dead, however, Muslim Brotherhood supporters of Mr. Morsi urged followers to take to the streets on Thursday, a day after the assault on the camps set off a violent backlash across Egypt and underscored the new governments determination to crush the Islamists who dominated the free elections over the past two years.
Mohamad Fathallah, the Health Ministry spokesman, told the official Al Ahram Web site that the toll so far stood at 525 with 3,717 injured. He said the biggest concentration of killings, numbering 202, had been in the larger of the two protest camps in Nasr City suburb, with 87 recorded in the smaller Nahda Square camp near Cairo University. A further 29 deaths were reported from the Helwan area on the outskirts of Cairo with 207 from other areas around the country.

The only reasonable conclusion is that Al-Sisi wanted exactly this order of mayhem and murder in order to to install the draconian state of emergency that existed under Mubarak and that is what he did. He knew that the reaction from some of the MB and their supporters would be violent retaliation. There was never any intent on his part to transition to democracy. He's a strong man of the worst kind.
And a vile murdering fuck.

(26,060 posts)Except for the Coptics whose churches are getting burned to the ground. When your choices are a violent military and religious fanatics, you'll have to forgive those of us who don't want to support either side.

(40,366 posts)to be concerned over people being shot down by the hundreds. I think one can be on the side of humanity.

(26,060 posts)I would have thought it would be understood that anyone on this board is sick over the massacre of innocents? My point was that while I deplore the violence, there are no good guys in the leadership of either side. And I use the term guys very purposely.
no good guys and bad guys, except who ever is doing the killing.

(26,060 posts)they're are no good guys. The leadership of both sides are the ones causing the violence.

(26,060 posts)It literally goes against the heart of what being a Democrat is. Very glad I've missed those posts - it would have been hard not to get banned with my reaction. My dilemma is wanting the violence to stop but not wanting either "side" to win.

(114,904 posts)and I don't know what the population of the country was at the time.
In any case, I haven't a clue as to what your point is with that question, or if you have one at all.

(42,239 posts)That is what for the time being is suppressing the true number of deaths. Eventually there will be a tally up and the truth will out.
