Man steals computer from a church and caught after asking to have the porn filter removed

A thief stole a computer from inside a church, but he was only caught after his repeated attempts to try and access pornography on the machine were thwarted by a security company, that he then rang to try and remove the porn block, who then lead the police straight to him.

Troy Ridling, who is a member of the Owasso First Assembly of God, which is located in Oklahoma, stole the piece of machinery from his own parish earlier in the month.

The church recognised that the theft was probably an inside job, as there wasn’t any signs of a break-in. However they still didn’t have any clues to help them find the criminal, and even after they called the police, who were of little help due to the lack of evidence, they were still flummoxed to how they could catch the person responsible.

However, Covenant Eyes, a tracking software company, soon helped crack the case wide open, when they noticed some peculiar activity on the stolen device. They called the church to tell them that whoever had the computer was trying to access a lot of porn, but they were unable to.

Tired of only having the NSA logging your most private internet activities? Join today!

As for the church member thief, I don't think any punishment beyond being publicly named for this little escapade will be necessary.

Covenant Eyes seems to have a slight religious bent, so may appeal to the 'IT departments' of churches as well:

I have made a covenant with my eyes.” – Job 31:1

More than a decade ago, Covenant Eyes founder Ron DeHaas faced the same questions many people face today.

“How can I teach my children to use the Internet with integrity?”
“How do I guard my own heart and remain pure online?”
“How do I serve as an example to my family and church?”

Realizing the threat the Internet poses without proper monitoring, he formed Covenant Eyes to equip people to protect themselves and their families from online dangers.

Located in Owosso, Michigan, Covenant Eyes is the pioneer of Internet Accountability software, empowering our members to maintain their online integrity. Aware of an ever-growing need to better equip parents, Covenant Eyes has developed a family Internet filter that restricts usage based on parental controls.
