Today in Peace and Justice history on August 16, 1963


Buddhists staged protests across South Vietnam against the government of President Ngo Dinh Diem, a Catholic who removed Buddhists from important government positions and replaced them with Catholics. Buddhist monks protested Diem’s intolerance of other religions and the methods he used to silence them. http://bit.ly/14QmGWA

...was the monk Quang Duc earlier that summer.

If it affected me a 6-year-old kid so profoundly, I can only imagine what it meant to the grown-ups.
