Buddhists staged protests across South Vietnam against the government of President Ngo Dinh Diem, a Catholic who removed Buddhists from important government positions and replaced them with Catholics. ...was the monk Quang Duc earlier that summer.

If it affected me a 6-year-old kid so profoundly, I can only imagine what it meant to the grown-ups.
