New York City mayor says fingerprints should be used to access public housing

By Francesca Trianni
NEW YORK | Fri Aug 16, 2013 5:43pm EDT

(Reuters) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Friday that fingerprint technology should be used to admit residents to city-run housing projects as a way of increasing security.

"What we really should have is fingerprinting to get in," Bloomberg said while speaking on WOR-AM radio about ways to improve safety in public housing. "We've just gotta find some ways to keep bringing crime down there."

Marc LaVorgna, a spokesman for the mayor's office, said Bloomberg was talking about using fingerprint technology to replace traditional locks.

Bill Thompson, the former city comptroller and sole African American candidate in the mayor race, called Bloomberg's fingerprint remarks "disrespectful" and "disgraceful."

It no longer recognizes me, and my finger hasn't changed.

This would be a major FAIL.

I might incur a bunch of wrath but - if I could have access to my building with a finger scan I would not have a problem with it.

Hell, make it a punch in code too. What is the problem? My fingerprints have been logged into the FBI and NSA. If it would make it safer to get into my apartment I say way to go.

OK - tell me why I am wrong.

I'm not following his reasoning on this. Are fingerprint locks somehow more secure than other types of locks?

because the keys cannot be lost, stolen, copied, etc. Although it is possible to replicate a fingerprint, its no piece of cake.
