It was a scene straight out of Tiananmen Square but set in Egypt, with an unarmed young men standing defiantly in front of a tank and daring them to shoot.
Only this time, they did.
A shot fired by somebody inside the vehicle pierced the daring Egyptians body and left him writhing to the ground, a display of naked brutality by the countrys military regime that was caught on a video that quickly went viral Friday.
His name, or whether he managed to survive being shot at point blank range, was not known.

(35,282 posts)What's "this", you ask? Why, thank you for asking.
"This" is the fact that the soldiers are willing with little hesitation to gun down civilians on the street, snipe at them from rooftops and helicopters, and generally treat fellow civilians like trash. In such large numbers.
It's one thing for a foreign enemy that you think is out after your land, or an enemy that's attacked you.
Even Kent State was confusing, with the possibility of shots fired at the students a minute or so before the main flurry of shots. This isn't confusing. In Egypt we have soldiers not at any risk calmly aiming and firing at civilians who are unarmed.
I don't get it. I have a hunch that in the US many soldiers, perhaps most, would say "no" and some would turn on their commanders.

(1,315 posts)But when the PTB identify you as an insurgent, and enemy of the Government... the bullets will fly.
There is a huge gulf between civilians and the troops, and speaking from experience, we often view civilians with disdain, it's wrong, but there is a definite mindset of us and them. This will be used and when the orders come down they will follow them.

They have labelled the protesters as terrorists, and stripped them of civil and human rights.

5 Billion in support of the Egyptian Generals? This isn't going to end anytime soon.
