Scott Pelley earns his government paycheck

I'm as cynical as anyone about our bought-and-paid-for corporate media talking heads, but I was gobsmacked by Scott Pelley's coverage tonight of Bart Gellman's report in the WaPo that the NSA has "broken privacy rules or overstepped its legal authority thousands of times each year since Congress granted the agency broad new powers in 2008".

Pelley: "...internal audit that shows that the NSA is occasionally snooping on phone calls of American citizens"
(me How does 2776 violations in one year in one location qualify as "occasional"? How about some facts, Scott?

Pelley: "While checks are in place, it turns out that mistakes are made..."
(me How does Pelley know that these violations are mistakes?

Pelley: "The NSA's John DeLong says that the mistakes are routinely disclosed to the FISA court, the Justice department, and to Congress"
(me I guess "routinely" doesn't mean "comprehensively", because the next sentence out of Pelley's mouth is:

"The fact that there are thousands of privacy breaches stunned members of Congress."

Pelley wraps up his objective report with this:

"The White House said that the audit itself is evidence that the government is being careful"
(me How stupid do they think we are?

Every now and then, I need a reminder that tuning into network news is hazardous to your mental health.

hill from there. Pelley is more bland than bad.

But, Katie Couric, she was the anti-Christ.
