In most cases the child is safe with the abducting parent. So they really don't merit the same kind of media attention as a child kidnapped by a stranger.

parent and little brother were killed and she was missing, made this more newsworthy.

That said, I am not so sure that if the identical circumstances happened to a black family it would have received such attention.
