in August and unusually cooler weather, should give climate deniers in the SF Bay Area pause. But it won't this is a disturbing trend IMO. It's like mid-September has arrived a month too early. Opinions please?

(7,010 posts)I remember going to the Pleasanton county fair, a few years back. It had to have been in the 90s.. because I went though a lot of slush cones that day! Are you getting some of our San Francisco fog over there? Someone said that San Francisco is like a giant Air Conditioner, and much of our fog sweeps eastward across the bay to cool down some areas some times. Than again, you get places like Concord where it will get up to the 100's during the Summer. That hot and dry heat.
We have blue skies and overcast here in the city today..I hope it warms up, because usually during the Summer its cold as hell at night with the Fog Monster!

Of course, with all that melted butter, its no wonder I am presently having heart problems. Well, at least it was satisfying. I only did it once, and that was enough...

(46,192 posts)the average includes some very hot days and some cooler days.
Pleasanton is among the hottest in the Bay Area but it's not as hot as Fresno, which averages 96-97 for an average August day.
also consider in what you're observing that: 1) we are in a drought 2) many trees you are looking at are non-native deciduous trees.
Gormy Cuss
(30,884 posts)That's true in the valleys from Concord to Dublin. There are heat waves where the temps spike up to 100+ and also occasional cooler spells. That's the pattern from July through September most years.
Last summer was MUCH cooler than this summer. That WAS an unusually cool summer. We also had a wet early winter and then nothing, which means that by this time of summer the ground is drier than normal. Unless those trees are irrigated they may be drought stressed.
burnodo
(2,017 posts)we have not had much of a summer...we had a heatwave of upper 80's low 90's with high humidity in late July, but the last 3, 4 weeks has seen highs in the low 70's and lows in the low 50's

The positioning of the jet stream is giving parts of Europe warmer than usual summer temps and parts of the US very cool summer temps.

(10,745 posts)Where I am(northern Texas, just due north of Dallas), the weather's been pretty much normal this year....and, with maybe a few small exceptions, so has most of the rest of the U.S. as far as it can be seen; it seems like only the West has had any real weirdness to deal with so far(the extreme cold in the Rockies in Jan., the Central Valley's unusually hot summer, etc.).
CreekDog

CreekDog
(46,192 posts)and our nighttime temperatures are not much different from average, and average nighttime temperatures have increased for decades in the Bay Area, even as our summer high temperatures have decreased slightly in recent years.

(7,010 posts)Where I live--it can be unbearably humid/hot one day and the next--gotta turn on the heat to get warm...nights in the mid-50's-60's near the beach is uncommon...but happening regularly the past couple years.
Blackberries are half the size they were last year-everything has ripened about 3 weeks early.
This is the driest year in Oregon, I understand-ever.
This past month-we've had little sun, dry, muggy cloudy days. A tad bit of rain. I'm inland just a bit. Not normal.
We have hardly any bees around this year to boot.

(10,893 posts)we had this past week. Of course today, it's back to being in the low-to-mid 80s this afternoon in Oakland. But when it was cooler last week, I wasn't randomly sweating during the day, and it was cool enough at one point to where I didn't need to leave the patio door open.
Either way, I had better not get used to this warm weather for too much longer because this Saturday, it'll be time for me to go away to HSU. Coastal Humboldt, such as Arcata and Eureka, is known for having gray and cool weather almost all year. Even when I visited last month, it was only in the low 60s. I check the temperatures there sometimes for the Hell of it, and it is rare that I see the coastal towns reach the 70 degree mark. They give SF a run for its money when it comes to having cool summers.

(7,010 posts)a clear sign of the climate changing.
AverageJoe90
(10,745 posts)I can see where you're coming from in regards to the North Pole, as I don't think anyone here will argue that Co2 output & certain other human activities are the primary driver of the ice melt from what we can see.....but I really don't think the unusual coolness in Nor. Cal. this year, is *necessarily* connected to climate change(though I guess we'll have to wait a while).

(81,220 posts)I CLEARLY remember when my family and I moved out here from the Midwest when I was nine. First thing my mother noticed was there wasn't any humidity - which could be unbearable back there. The difference was rather stark! Now, it can get comparatively thick and sticky here. A friend of mine was staying out here with us for a few days last week and she remarked on how humid it was. Disquieting, to say the least. It's been growing more humid here in SoCal over the last decade or so. I find it troubling.

(10,745 posts)I'll tell you what *does* disturb me, though: Arctic ice melt. Now *that* can only be fully explained with Co2 output and certain other human activities.....

(4,475 posts)Weirdest summer we've had since I moved here 10 years ago.
I didn't get any vegetables at all this year. Usually I get so many squashes I can't eat them all. This year, not one. One solitary tomato from the tomato plant, that's it. All my perennial flowers still look like they do in early May - small, not very many blooms.
We had a very late spring, only about 2 weeks of "normal" summer, and now we're having a very early fall. The trees are even starting to turn, approximately 5 weeks early. It's bizarre.

it's happening up here in Washington State too. My fall trees are already in late summer to fall mode. It was a dry winter (I think 1 day of snow), and a very dry summer. If it wasn't for my sprinkler system and a few others the cul de sac would look like Arizona.

(10,745 posts)It would take something truly monumental for something like that to happen(such as a shift in Earth's orbiting patterns), if you're talking about every season.....TBH, that's not something climate change can really do consistently.
