9: What is a Cadillac Health Plan?
The PPACA imposes a 40 percent excise tax on Cadillac health insurance plans. This new tax will apply to health plans valued in excess of $10,200 for individuals and $27,500 for families. Those thresholds will grow annually by inflation plus 1 percent. The tax takes effect in 2018.

(31,818 posts)But more needs to be included from the article:
"A lot of folks on the individual market will see price increases if theyre not eligible," said Ward Sanders, president of the New Jersey Association of Health Plans, a group that represents health insurers.
Its unknown how many B&E subscribers will be eligible. Insurers including Horizon, which sells the lions share of B&E plans, and AmeriHealth New Jersey dont collect data about these policyholders incomes.
But insurers say they will be ramping up efforts to inform customers about their options next month, when the federal and state regulators are expected to announce the rates and products available for next year .
Let's wait and see - maybe it will turn out like other states where Premiums went down. Maybe some organization other than Blue Cross Horizon or Amerihealth will come in and tell these folks: "Look - they got away with giving you a big bag of shit but we want your money and we want to give you a better plan."
What I took away from that article - they are basically throwing a few hundred dollars out the window each month for a piece of shit plan that BARELY covers their health care needs.
Medicare for All. Obamacare was a good start - but we need to build on it and expand it so that EVERYONE can buy Medicare.

But now that B&E policies have become entrenched, some health care professionals say it is probably the time to pull the plug on them. Thats because despite the increased costs that come with more comprehensive coverage, B&E plans come packaged with something potentially worse: "A false sense of security," notes Raymond Castro, senior policy analyst at New Jersey Policy Perspective.
The most basic B&E plan, for example, provides each covered person just $600 for wellness services; $700 for physicians visits for injuries and illnesses; and $500 for diagnostic tests, immunizations and other procedures done outside a hospital. On top of that, theres no coverage for prenatal care, chemotherapy and ambulance services, among other things.
Insurance professionals say judging from the complaints and questions they hear from customers, people can be surprised at how quickly their benefits disappear.
"If you buy it when youre healthy, you dont think about it," Sheeran of Glenn Insurance said of B&E plans. "Then when something happens, youre stuck."

(5,043 posts)It is ending the sale of a particular type of health insurance plan - one that, according to experts quoted at the end of the article, isn't very helpful if you actually need health care.
I recommend people read the whole article, not just the headline on DU, before anyone panics.
