There are only two things you need to know about this new TV show on TLC, which airs tonight at 8 p.m.:
1. The picture above.
2. The title: The Man with the 132 lb. Scrotum.
Honey Boo-Boo, we never thought youd be the classiest thing on TLC. We were wrong.

(111,250 posts)and the whole story was really very sad. The guy resisted surgery for a long time, he was proud of that grotesquery. He thought he was being admired for it and maybe he was.
It's like the sex workers who keep getting bigger and bigger implants until you wonder how they can walk without a wheelbarrow.
Body image, it can be really weird.

(24,096 posts)we dropped our cable this week and it feels like a boil being lanced - the relief!
so sick of shit like this and Storage wars and all the ultra ridiculous mind rotting Crap! even National Geographic has gone bezerk with their stupid Hillbilly hand fishing and whatever else Crap they have.
Got a Roku and tons of free channels and Netflix and are much happier now. And way cheaper too.

(18,318 posts)I've got a very long length of pipe and an unused T.V. antenna from Radio Snack. And the cable service I have now is a backed-up toilet -- and I have to pay for it. Time to cut it off.

(26,602 posts)were actually watching and craptastic was the stuff we were watching. I'm sure I'll feel a bit of a twinge when football season comes around, but that will quickly evaporate when I discover that it's actually possible to be off the couch on a Fall Sunday afternoon...

(20,817 posts)that their upcoming "My Teen is Pregnant and so Am I", and the just-concluded first season of WE's "Pregnant and Dating" were the worst! Here, "reality" tv has REALLY jumped the shark now, beyond what it did years ago. Wow.

Or did no one in this guy's life care enough to drag his ass to the doctor before he was in such distress?

(10,893 posts)now gives Jerry Springer and Bill Cunningham a run for their money when it comes to trash TV. Totally ironic for a network that is called "The Learning Channel".

(112,134 posts)Second, I don't believe that anybody has shown a lack of compassion or sympathy towards the man. Please read post #5 for my reaction to the story.
Yes, there are wisecracks about the man's plight because it is such an unusual condition and the condition was satirized on South Park a few years ago (I remember when it was shown). IIRC, in that episode there was no mention about the condition to any actual people so people thought it was a farce. Lo and behold, the condition actually does exists.
What is in question here is the dubious taste of the TLC to turn this into a reality show. Based upon the clip of the show that is at the TLC link, I believe that people will actually learn about his medical condition and he probably will receive a lot of sympathy for his plight. I understand that he has had an operation to alleviate his condition and hopefully he will receive some financial help to pay for the medical procedures so that he can move ahead from this condition to lead a more normal life.
I've found DU to be a very caring community when people are in need, but at the same time we also show some levity on individual stories. We aren't perfect, but we aren't monsters either.
