I was looking forward to my new job when I started working at a McDonalds location in Pennsylvania in April, but I was disappointed to find out that in order to be paid, I would have to activate a JP Morgan Chase debit card with heavy fees attached.
Im a young single mom. When I started my job at McDonalds, I knew that I would only be making slightly more than minimum wage. I didnt expect that the only way I would be paid would be on a debit card that would dock pay that I earned through lots of different fees. When I asked if McDonalds could pay me through direct deposit to my local credit union, which doesnt charge withdrawal fees, I was told that the debit card was the only option.
These cards come with a lot of fees: from fees for cash withdrawals to balance inquiries to lost or stolen cards to overdrafts and even inactivity fees. The federal government has helped reduce fees on credit and debit cards that most consumers use, but those protections dont apply to the kinds of cards companies like McDonald's are using to pay employees. In the end, I feared that once all of the fees from getting my own hard-earned wages through this card were taken out, my pay would go below minimum wage.

(65,227 posts)to pay someone who performed a service for me: e.g., babysitting, typing, mowing the lawn, or cleaning. But when one such person ended up having to pay a $10 fee to cash my check--because he didn't have a personal checking account--I stopped paying by check. (Of course I also reimbursed him for the fee he'd had to pay!)
I didn't realize before it happened that someone could be ripped off that way, but as soon as I learned about it, I took steps to prevent it from happening to anyone I paid for working for me.
I don't think for a minute that a big corporation like McD's doesn't know its employees are screwed over by fees when paid by debit cards. If somehow McD's didn't know before, they certainly do know now, so they have no excuse for continuing the practice!

(78,249 posts)because what they are doing is ILLEGAL in Pa. Not only do the fees put her below minimum wage, but Pa. law states that a worker has the right to be paid by cash or check.
