Last edited Wed Aug 21, 2013, 12:57 AM - Edit history (1)
I've actually been out of work since January of 2011. My 4th and final Fed unemployment benefit extension just ran out last week (after the weekly benefit being cut from $450 to $368 a few months ago thanks to the sequester).
I've been interviewing with some consistency over that period, but at age 58, I'm afraid that ageism is the major hurdle that has kept me from being hired.
However, the ageism issue was handled during the phone interviews for this latest prospective position. Tomorrow, I meet for a face-to-face interview. I have a very good feeling about this one.
Looking for support anywhere I can get it. So, how about it, DU buds?
Update 8/20: The interview went great. The scheduled one hour interview turned into 2 hrs - including being treated to lunch. After lunch, was taken to meet and say hi to the CEO and that turned into an hour-plus discussion as well. Everything seemed very positive.
I have a very good feeling about this. Plus, it's a job I would really like to do.
Fingers crossed big time.

(130,903 posts)You know, the worst part about being unemployed for so long is that you KNOW that your talent and experience are going to waste sitting on the sidelines.
I've tried to compensate for that by doing volunteer work. I mean, a LOT of volunteer work. But there's something to be said about earning a paycheck.

(28,076 posts)I was laid off 2-1/2 years ago. This was my 2nd layoff since 2004 and ageism played a part in the first layoff. It took me nearly a year to find a job that time.
This time I did got lucky and find a contract job after only 4 months. And about 9 months after that I found a permanent job -- I was 58 at the time. I just turned 60 and I will admit that sometimes it feels odd being so much older than the rest of the team but that really is coming more from my own feelings that the rest of the group and I keep it to myself.
I think some employers/managers are waking up to the idea that experience is a good thing and older workers tend to be reliable. In my case it probably helped that my manger's manager is close to my age.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

(14,918 posts)writing down all the assets you will bring to the position and reasons why you are the right person for the job, and then review it just before you go into the interview. Give yourself all the compliments you richly deserve. I know it can feel very deflating to be without work when you have great skills and talents. You might also think about spending a little time visualizing yourself acing the interview and being happy and fulfilled in the new job. Good on you for spending your time productively and generously by volunteering!

(112,171 posts)I'm a bit younger, but worked in IT where the unemployment rate is still around 14%. I'm also contending with the fact that I have no transportation and live in a small town where there is only one local employer that has jobs in my field. I just submitted an application with that company and I'm hoping to hear back from them this week. While I'm not disabled, I'm not in physical shape to handle a job requiring a lot of activity due to medical issues that affect my balance and stamina. I doubt that I could remain on my feet if I were to shift to a lower-paying position and the local employers have plenty of better candidates that are better suited for those positions. IOW, I'm over-qualified for many of the jobs that are available through online searches and most only pay about 40% of what I previously earned.
The only asset that I have is the equity of the home of deceased father which has just been listed with a realtor, so I'm hampered to even afford the bus fare and hotel bill if I do get called for an interview out of town.
I hope that you get the job--it's depressing losing one's independence and sense of worthiness no matter one's age.
