You didn't know SF had such a big African American community, did you?
It doesn't. Only 6 percent of city residents are black.

By contrast, around 42 percent of city residents are white, but the group accounts for only 22 percent of jail residents....
"Younger adults are the most likely age group to be incarcerated," the report states. "In San Francisco, 52 percent of inmates are between the ages of 18 and 35. ... In addition, the jail population is disproportionately African American. ... African Americans age 18 to 25 constitute the largest demographic group in jail, accounting for 16 percent of the total inmate population."

(7,010 posts)OAKLAND (CBS SF) An attorney for an off-duty San Francisco police officer who was pulled over and allegedly harassed by other officers in the citys Bayview District last week said Tuesday that the incident is quite disturbing and an example of racial profiling.
Civil rights lawyer John Burris said it was appropriate for the other officers to stop off-duty Officer Lorenzo Adamson, who has been on disability for back problems for several months, at the corner of Third Street and Newcomb Avenue at about 8:20 p.m. on Thursday because his license plate on his car wasnt visible, although he had it inside his car.
But Burris said it was wrong that the first question that the officers, who are white, asked of Adamson, who is black, was whether he was on probation or parole.
That assumes that everyone in the Bayview community is on probation and parole and it makes the communitys constitutional rights diminished, Burris said at a news conference at his office in Oakland.

And if you Google you find a history of this shit in the city.

(13,598 posts)Obviously, there are two reasons this might be the case - that black people commit crimes per capita than white people, or that white people are more likely to get away with it/less likely to be wrongfully convicted.
I'm aware that there's fairly strong evidence that both those are true, "to a significant extent", but not more precisely than that . Does anyone know of any data on how much each factor contributes?

(16,843 posts)When I went to SF, I couldn't believe how many homeless there were, and most of them were black. I'm sure they're much more likely to get arrested than other citizens. I didn't see very many black people in SF who weren't homeless, now that I think about it. This was a long time ago, however, and I don't know how much has changed since then.
