I can think of 10,000 ways it could keep continuing, but I can't think of a single way it could ever end. Will there be a day where the US gov can say... yup... no more terrorists. It's really a mind fuck because anyone from any party for any reason can show evidence that something bad is still happening here or somewhere else.
Is the war on terror not a war at all but a way to drastically alter how things are done and how people perceive what reasonable is? Will I be sitting with my grand kids many years from now talking about what happened that day with the war on terror?

(20,600 posts)There are several advantages to having a war on terror for certain industries and the fear in the populace also can be useful for the powers that be. I'm not sure it will be called off any time soon.

Not that you will until it's far too late, but you guys really should take a step back and just look at the ideas you're advocating, as well as the people and the evil you're defending.

Obama needs a congress that will make him or allow him to change this policy.

(14,459 posts)If Putin calls someone a terrorist, we laugh. When our people call someone a terrorist, some people are all serious about it.
"Terrorism" in essence is anything the leaders of a country don't approve of. If they work for us, they're "Freedom Fighters." If they work for people we don't like, they're "terrorists."
It's all an opinion. We're being asked to fight a war of opinion. As long as that opinion needs propping up, people will be killed for it.

(4,775 posts)Great question, it should be repeated at every opportunity.
Obviously the people in charge have no plans for it to ever end. For many of them, their jobs depend on it.
What's the end-game? You could say that this IS the end-game. You could also say that it is a tool for repealing our civil liberties and bringing greater control over the masses to the powers that be. Either of those seems correct to me.
A better question is how can we stop this madness?
It might be possible to elect a POTUS who does everything in his/her power to stop it. Debatable what the results of that would be, but it would be great if we could get someone to try. They'll need all the help they can get from congress and from the public.
The current administration is obviously not interested in doing so, it's part of the problem rather part of the solution. Same with Biden and Hillary. It was difficult to know this from the campaign rhetoric, so we'll have to more carefully vet our candidates in the 2016 primary.
Our country has lost the respect most of the world had for it due to the global war on terror, and that's karma that will come down on our heads eventually, either through war-on-terror-inspired terrorism (blowback) or global structural changes that lead away from U.S. economic and military power. Either way the citizens of the U.S. will pay an enormous price. It has to be stopped.

(5,279 posts)War can only be declared by an act of congress. Did we openly declare war, on who, legally the has to be an adversary. Who was declared by congress, an enemy so heinous the only recourse is death of them or us?
If, this war is being waged on the authority of the President alone. Why hasn't congress undone it? If we have had 40 attempts to undo the ACA, Why haven't there been 400 attempts do undo the conflict? I hear an awful lot of anti-war talk from members of congress. I call bullshit.
Fucking do something.
After 10 years of combat, would it be to much to ask congress to ask what/who we are fighting today? To define or demand a definition of exactly a terrorist is. And not a definition to fit the current situation, but the president setting, legal, end all definition of what who the United States of America considers a agent of terror.
And when we remove or subdue that adversary, we help rebuild what we broke, pack up and come home.

I fear that even the youngest among us will not live to see this WOT "end". Bushco's multigenerational contribution to the world - an ideological war with no goals, no definition of success, and no clearly definable enemies.
