(23,726 posts)thought they should have paid more attention to Watergate and they should have made Reagan look morse than they did. Wished they would have used more actual footage.

(90,560 posts)The gents in question sounded reasonably like the various Oval Office occupants, but didn't look like them much at all. I mean, here was good ol' Tricky Dick in the throes of Watergate, late at night, obviously sloshed, and where, I ask, were his deep dark whiskers? The man was famous for his 5 o'clock shadow. And so it went. Jack Kennedy was way too young and slender -- I mean, "young" as in "barely 30". Eisenhower was passable. Lyndon Johnson's face should have been deeply lined, and wasn't.
Picky, maybe, but we rely on visual cues and they were lacking. They did the wives better.
As for the plot -- I'd love to read the original now. What a history The Butler had.

(72,790 posts)Oprah Winfrey.
I hear it's very good but just can't see anything Oprah is in. I quickly turn the channel every time she shows up on my tv screen.

(22,057 posts)Bet she will be in this too. But I can understand your reaction. There are plenty of actors that I despise to the point I'll either change the channel or, if I can't, then I'll leave the room.
John Wayne works my last good nerve. IMHO the only character he ever played was John Wayne. My friends tell me I'm a fool with no appreciation of his talent and if I'll only watch "...... ... ....." I'll see that he's a genius. Not gonna happen in this lifetime.

(6,107 posts)The major conflict in the film is between the subservient butler and his son, who is out getting his ass kicked in the civil rights movement.
I thought it was a good movie, but not great. Whitaker and Winfrey were terrific, but the stunt casting of the Presidents didn't work for me. And there were some plot elements that seemed farfetched.

(27,310 posts)The servant or the rebel? Or was the rebel not an important part except to highlight the dignity of the subservience
I love Whitaker. Not a fan of Winfrey. And the stunt casting of the Presidents has kept me away from seeing the movie.
Enraged_Ape
(6,107 posts)But I will tell you that you would not be disappointed by how things end up. That part of the movie, at least, was very moving.
The film actually serves as an effective tribute to the civil rights movement and all the shit that those people went through.
