And now we're surprised that we live our lives under the microscope of Big Brother. Com'on...the only error George Orwell made was having 1984 filed in the "FICTION" aisle.
Don't get me wrong - I think O is approaching this poorly at best. Finally, after 5+ years, we get to see what it's like when he's angry. Where was that anger when court and exec branch appointments were being blocked. Where was that anger when rethugs were gutting key legislation.
My disappointment has changed. Before, I wasn't sure he had backbone. Now I see that he does and he just didn't want to use it. Sad.

Yeah, Obama's campaign promises sounded real pretty. Yeah, the reality is quite the opposite. Is it his "fault?" What a waste of time that question can be.
We have to start vetting our candidates for ALL elected positions better - not in terms of who they slept with or what kind of dog they have or how that dog is transported from place to place, but in terms of how sincere they are about actually representing the people and upholding the constitution.
I'd personally like to see some kind of minimum standard of engagement be upheld too, pretty damn tired of name calling and extreme branding. But that's just me.

(10,926 posts)What magic powers did Bush have that Obama doesn't?
Give me a fucking break. Obama is in charge EXACTLY TO THE DEGREE BUSH WAS IN CHARGE.
Maybe you think he's lesser because he's black? Is that it?
haele
(12,640 posts)Halliburton, Carlyle, KBR, Goldman Sachs, and assorted other corporations and "think tanks" were in charge. By the end of the 1980's, the government was already half-privatized, and there was a lot of money to be made working contracts with all the government agencies...
That's why, with a very few exceptions, cabinet members and presidential advisor's have all been "industry professionals" instead of academics or local experts.
Bush was the figurehead and the person that "signed the checks". But Bush couldn't have done anything without the Congress or the Senate. That's the whole idea between seperation of powers that has been written into our Constitution. The President is not a Dictator or a Law-Maker, he (or she) is the Commander in Chief for the Military ONLY, and the Chief Executive (i.e., overall administrator) for the other agencies within the Federal government.
Congress was the bank for these companies, and many Congress-critters made lots of money from government contractors, either directly or indirectly. When Bush "put his foot down and got something done", his agency heads already had their marching orders from the people who were funding them.
Oddly enough, the Military is one of the few organizations where the President actually has a position within the Hierarchy, which is why the Military is the only agency that will generally do a President's bidding without question or back-dooring him (or her) through Congress.
Even the Justice Department quibbles rules or outright ignores them to "do their job", both in the past, and now.
You think Holder is bad? Look at what J. Edgar Hoover did, and he was just head of the FBI.
No, Bush had no more magic powers than Obama. And Obama has exactly the same amount of power Bush had.
Here's the reality of the government -
Congress funds the NSA, can direct and fund real investigations and make permanent laws to hobble it or shut it down. Congress oversees and approves by continuing the funding of, the activities of the NSA. That's a very big stick to control an organization like that.
While the President appoints the director of the NSA and can propose the directions NSA activities will take, that's not as large a stick as Congress has. The NSA and the contractors who are making money off the NSA are far more worried about Congress than they are of the President.
And there's a lot of "high level government appointees" and their pet managers at the NSA and other organizations who are still thinking it's okay to be a lazy fascist playing a political game rather than take a democratic system of laws, checks, and balances seriously.
President Obama could do maybe a little more by being more honest with us, but there's not a lot he can do about the NSA without Congress taking a more serious stance themselves.

The America you attribute to President Obama was established decades ago...
The files contain details of the recently avowed UKUSA Agreement - the top secret, post-war arrangement for sharing intelligence between the United States and the UK. Signed by representatives of the London Signals Intelligence Board and its American counterpart in March 1946, the UKUSA Agreement is without parallel in the Western intelligence world and formed the basis for co-operation between the two countries throughout the Cold War.
