Now it is far too easy to assume that Winfrey will definitely be on that Oscar stage in March, delighting A-listers like George Clooney and Reese Witherspoon with the news that You get a car! And you get a car! Its very early in the race, and there are still performances with loads of early buzz to come from Cameron Diaz in The Counselor, Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle, and, especially, Meryl Streep in August: Osage County.
Plus, the supporting-actress race, perhaps more than any other, is the one in which voters have proven particularly gleeful in rewarding actresses one would hardly ever expect to be associated with the Oscar statues for their surprisingly strong work. Lee Daniels directed one such actress, MoNique, to a win in the category just three years ago for her work in Precious, while Dreamgirls Jennifer Hudson, Mighty Aphrodites Mira Sorvino, and My Cousin Vinnys Marisa Tomei saw themselves become not only the unlikeliest of Oscar contenders but eventual winners.
The Butler marks Oprahs first appearance in a film in 15 years, a milestone thats helped accomplish the first hurdle on the way to an Oscar nomination: getting your film on voters radar. She deliver a knockout performance, helping her clear the second big hurdle: living up to expectations. Theres still a lot of race to run, but with such an early lead already, expect Oprah to finish as she does so often: in first place.
And then set your TiVos for what will likely be one of the most memorable acceptance speeches of all time.

(40,416 posts)Except for possibly the person who most promotes ignorance.
She's made a billion (or more) promoting rubbish. Dr. "I was the worst marriage counselor on the planet" Phil, who does marriage counselling on her TV program, and even got his own show, thanks to Oprah's ignorance.
She promoted "The Secret"... The fucking Secret!! In other words, if I want a unicorn in my garden which can fart rainbows, I can get one. All I have to do is want one.
She supports Jenny "First my son was a Crystal Child, but now I've decided it's autism caused by VACCINES!!" McCarthy.
She supports Dr. Oz, who supports John "of God", the quack who does psychic surgery. Oprah supports the wackaloon John "Of God" herself.
Oprah doesn't deserve anything but derision. She's an ignorant buffoon.
Sorry.

(45,319 posts)and so forth. So what others think is beside the entire point and has no part in the process. She will have fierce competition this year. I'd say a nomination is in the bag for her, a win much more tenuous.

(40,416 posts)She's used her previous fame to promote nothing but ignorance, for which she has gotten vastly wealthy.
Why in the fuck would I want such a stupid person to have more leverage?
I wouldn't. Ignorance should never, ever be rewarded.
Oprah is a nightmare to rationally thinking people. She uses her fame to promote utter rubbish.
The FUCKING Secret! And Jenny McCarthy should be enough.
Sorry. I cannot support that ignorant person for anything that would leverage her horribly wrong opinions. And that is what she did with her first Oscar.
Oprah sucks. Utterly!

Oprah's anti-science positions are on record. She promotes all sorts of pseudo-science.
Her position has a body count, if only for her support of Jenny McCarthy's anti-vaccine advocacy which has resulted in thousands of deaths of infants by preventable diseases if only people would vaccinate their children. Everything that McCarthy has said about vaccines has been shown to be utter rubbish. (Before McCarthy discovered vaccines, her excuse was that her son was a "Crystal Child", a space alien/human hybrid -- for Christ sake!)
But Oprah gives this wackaloon airtime on her program to spew her anti-science rubbish. Just like Dr. Phil. Just like Dr. Oz, surrogate for John of God (no hubris there, heh, heh!). Etc. Etc. Etc.
No further fame for such a person who uses her fame and bounteous fortune to promote ignorance.
Oprah -- possibly unwittingly -- uses it for evil. She's apparently not educated enough to know the difference. That's the most sad thing about the whole matter.
Sorry. Cannot support such a thing.
