My hope is someone will tell me this is a Onion article.. that somehow got posted into the news by accident

just one little excerpt from the article:
1. Your Television
Ever wonder how your TV remembers what shows youve watched, which ones you plan to watch, and how long you watched last episode of Homeland before falling into nightmare-ridden sleep?
It does it all by connecting to the Internet. Therein lies its weakness. Computer Security firm ReVuln proved last year that it could hack Samsungs newest televisions, accessing users settings, installing malware on the TVs and any connected devices, and harvesting all the personal data stored on the machine. They could even switch on the camera embedded in the TV and watch viewers watching the set.
Samsung says it patched the security flaw. That said, whos to say that Samsung is the only brand to have experienced a security issue?

Imagine the good fun a hacker could have with a fully automated house

How we have to have the latest and greatest new dandy item, just thinking about all the smart phones people go through and the elements in those phones that are so damaging to the environment.
Its mind boggling and now all those goodies are watching you..

(62,325 posts)I know, it sounds insane, but it is true. However when Londoners found out that while they were leaning against a garbage can talking on their phones, an 'orb' in the garbage can was watching and listening, there was enough outrage to get them banned.
The City of London is putting a stop to a troop of trash cans monitoring the smartphones of passers by. I admit, that is a sentence I never thought I would write. Quartz was first to report on this interesting feature of the latest refuse cans. The trash cans in question were installed in the run up to the Olympics and were installed at no cost to the tax payer instead funded by a screen which could display advertising. We have all grown pretty used to being constantly bombarded with advertising, so what is the big deal? Interestingly, a number of these trash cans recently had tracking orbs (why on earth it is called an orb other than to sound awesome) which pick up broadcasts from your smartphone as you walk past.

As we overlay our movements in the digital and physical world more and more such scenarios will become far more intrusive and far more common. You may want to ask yourself what is spying on you already, what might in the future, what information you are sharing and whether you are OK with this trade off of convenience and privacy.
'Every step you take,
Every move you make
I'll be watching you
Oh can't you see
You belong to me'
This should be the anthem of the Surveillance State!

One thing that may contribute to some people accepting these violations of our rights, is the lack of a knowledge of history.
We need to teach more history. Many are living in a bubble here with zero concept of what can happen if these policies and intrusions on our rights, are not reigned in.
