Such a thing might feed his "the system is too evil to allow a genuine defense" mentality. Obviously he thought the system was evil enough to attack the military of that system.

On a related subject, I hope he gets life without parole rather than the death penalty. There is no reason to give Hasan his wish to become a martyr. Let him sit in a prison cell and think about what he did for the next thirty or forty years.
