Michigan Primary Blues

Last edited Sun Feb 26, 2012, 03:42 AM - Edit history (4)

It's closed… At least for me, it is. Since Michigan does not require party affiliation, and I'll refuse to give mine.

One has to chose from either a Democratic ballot, or a Republican one, but not both at the same time.

I will not vote in the Republican primary, for any Republican under any circumstance. I will ask for a Democratic ballot and vote for President Obama, who will be the only candidate listed.

Please correct anyone who says that the primary here in Michigan is open.

It is not. It's semi-closed… Quasi-closed

It's the margarine of closed.

It's the Diet Coke of closed. Just one calorie, not closed enough.

Illinois has closed primaries as well, but you can change your affiliation at the polling place, so effectively the only thing they prevent you from doing is taking the ballot of more than one party.

And I won't give it.

But apparently the closed primary will have the same effect here as it does in IL.

... whichever candidate you were trying to vote for to sandbag them won the primary and then the election, it won't be on your conscience.

Or your voting record, in my state, which is public. They can see what party you voted in for each primary. I briefly considered it, then determined that I didn't want that nasty "R" on my record.

Apparently, Michigan does not register party affiliation, so their "closed" primary has no way of being closed!

Some who opposed the measure say the primary will be closed in name only, since voters can just say they are Republican.

"Any registered voter — Republican, Democrat, communist — is eligible," Washtenaw County Republican Bill Bigler said during the debate reported by The Detroit News. "We should have a process by which Republicans choose the Republican nominee for president."

People calling the Republican Party are being told its closed but it is not

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/in-the-loop/post/michigan-primary-democratic-mischief/2012/02/15/gIQA2zQuHR_blog.html

A colleague called the Republican National Committee the other day and was told by a spokesman there that it was closed.

Then a longtime state GOP official said no, it ‘s “semi-closed.” That means it’s pretty much open.

Here’s how it works: voters walk into the polls and are asked to declare whether they want a Democratic ballot or a Republican ballot. They can pick either and then vote.

Now, under a new state rule, your choice will be record ed and public information — and could subject you to annoying robo-calls, vendor solicitations and such. Also, you’d have some explaining to do if you run for office in the future. But that’s about it.

The title of your thread is completely inaccurate.

You might not like asking for a Republican ballot but that has nothing to do with it being open or closed.

The Republican Party in Michigan is openly lying about it being open, trying to keep Democrats out.

If you want to stay home and not vote against Romney be my guess, but why do you persist in an OP that is clearly incorrect even after the facts have been well documented?

The Democratic Party in MI is encouraging people to go and ask for a Republican ballot.

You should edit the misleading and factually incorrect title of the OP.

When I vote on Tuesday in Michigan, I'm taking a Republican ballot and voting for Sanctimonium.

My vote will cost the GOP a bunch. They will obtain the voter lists and bombard my mailbox with glossy mailers all the way to election day in November.

I love it!

Sanctimonium! ... He's my guy!

If you want to make a difference and help Obama you will take a Repuklican ballot and vote for Santorum. The Democratic Party of Michigan, certainly not a Repulikan front, has reccommended Demoracts do exactly that. You Romney types trying to muddy the waters will hopefully be handed a nice juicy defeat by Democrats that know what the heck they are doing to help President Obama.
