http://thinkprogress.org/health/2012/02/24/432446/gillibrand-challenger-no-one-would-notice-if-roe-v-wade-were-overturned/Wendy Long, a conservative judicial activist challenging Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) said yesterday that no one would miss Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized abortion, if it were overturned. Long clerked for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and served as a counsel for the conservative Judicial Confirmation Network, but is perhaps best known for spearheading several inaccurate race baiting attacks against Justice Sonia Sotomayor during her confirmation process.

(37,648 posts)without there being much noticeable effect, because abortions are almost impossible to get, anyway, as a practical matter.

(12,504 posts)In 1966 Nicolae Ceaușescu banned abortions in Romania. Approximately 15 years later it was observed that crime rates had skyrocketed.
In 1973 Roe v Wade was passed, and in the 1980s Guliani was taking (undeserved) credit for the reduction in the crime rate in NY.

(3,747 posts)did crime go up because the non aborted were criminals? Or because the parents are reduced to thievery to feed their children?

(63,912 posts)it is the unwanted-ness of the children being born that is the key factor in increasing criminals in our society. And I think that argument holds water...

(65,068 posts)Yeah, nobody would notice a prohibition on something that's been declared legal for 40 years. Sure.
What an idiot.

(276 posts)While its possible she's a moran and actually thinks no one will notice, it's more likely that she doesn't think of 'sluts who use abortion as birth control' (since there's no other reason for abortion) as people.

(14,337 posts)because New York State legalized abortion before Roe, whereas New Jersey didn't. So the women of NJ just stayed in their own state and didn't have abortions because their state thought it should be illegal? Wanna buy a bridge? New Jersey women left their state and went to New York to have an abortion. New Jersey legislators were FURIOUS over this.
I remember those days.

(100,080 posts)Its the lifeblood of the insanely hardcore religious fundamentalists and really the only platform modern Catholicism thrives on. If they had their way this country would go berserk. I think it'd be the catalyst for starting a second civil war.
