Just watched for the first time for an hour. Have to say that I am impressed. Certainly an improvement on MSNBC on Saturday night.
Real news. Good footage. Good reporting.
For now I am pleased. Will keep on watching to see if it stays worth while.

(6,057 posts)I guess they figure that now that it's being offered in the USA on cable..... people should pay to see it.
I've been watching al Jazeera English on the internet for free and its' programs are quite informative.
Not sure why they decided to do that.
Fortunately, I have DirecTV and, so far, they are carrying the station.
Very worthwhile.

(48,121 posts)Those fans had grown accustomed to watching the pan-Arab broadcasters existing English-language news channel, called Al Jazeera English, via the Internet. But on Monday, Al Jazeera English turned off its live stream for users in the United States. It also started to geo-block the news reports it posts on YouTube, so that instead of seeing the videos, American users saw a message that said, The uploader has not made this video available in your country.
Al Jazeera officials said privately that in the run-up to the premiere of the new American channel, they had little choice but to acquiesce to cable and satellite providers, which generally discourage online competition of the kind that Al Jazeera English previously represented. In effect they have sacrificed Internet distribution for a shot at traditional distribution.
Al Jazeeras decision made a certain amount of sense, considering that most Americans spend far more time with television than the Internet. Still, complaints about the blockade piled up on Al Jazeera Americas Facebook page. One of the most-liked comments criticized the broadcaster for going backward by prioritizing TV over the Internet.

When Al Jazeera America premieres next Tuesday, Time Warner Cable will not be carrying the U.S.-based cable news channel.
Time Warner Cable dropped Current TV immediately after it was sold in January to Al Jazeera, which announced plans to use the cable slot for a future American news channel. The cable company, however, said it would keep an open mind as Al Jazeera America developed.

(6,057 posts)Go to the Al Jazeera site: http://america.aljazeera.com/content/ajam.html
Enter your zip code in the "Find Al Jazeera America on your TV" and you'll see a list of the cable providers in your area.
Go down to the cable provider list under: "Request Al Jazeera America from the following providers:" Fill in the information and it will send an e-mail to the cable provider requesting that they carry Al Jazeera America.

(6,057 posts)I'm currently only getting their internet service. But I might go with their TV package if they carried Al Jazeera America.

(10,337 posts)you should discontinue use of this product even if happy people are dancing all over your television screen? For fuck sake! Look at them! Are they NOT happy?

(50,949 posts)I always think, "hmmmm....but those people seemed so happy on the commercial.... Maybe just a couple more days on this product..."
But that's me.
I also used to iron my clothing while wearing it till I saw that tag on the cord that said not to...

Lots of female presenters, mostly with their natural hair colors. A wide range of ethnicities. Coverage of parts of the world you don't generally hear about. Some serious Michael Moore-style efforts to ask difficult questions of the comfortable.
I suspect there may turn out to be a few areas where Qatar puts a thumb on the scales, but so far I haven't spotted any obvious bias. And they're definitely not trying to curry favor with the usual inside-the-Beltway sources.
