Seeing 'New Jim Crow' Placards Seized by Police & More From the March on Washington

Based upon the speeches during the main portion of today’s events there can be little doubt that the Dr. King who was murdered in Memphis in 1968 would not have been allowed to speak at this fiftieth-anniversary commemoration of his life. There was no discussion of the “evil triplets.” Instead, we had far too many speakers pay homage to the narrowest possible liberal agenda in broad abstractions with none of the searing material truths that make Dr. King’s speeches so bracing even today.

(snip - Note that the author refers to King's quote about the evils of "militarism, materialism and racism" above - the reference is in the original article, but I am only posting 4 paragraphs to comply with DU rules.)

As Attorney General Eric Holder, the person who is not bringing federal civil rights charges against George Zimmerman, was allotted 30 minutes—fifteen times that of Julian Bond—to speak from the front stage, it was difficult to not think about the fact that it has taken five years for him to say anything about mass incarceration in this country. The late Bayard Rustin insisted as the lead organizer of the 1963 March on Washington that there be no politicians or political appointees allowed to speak. Clearly, there were different principles at work today.

(snip)

The day was symbolized for me on multiple levels by seeing DC Park police seize 200 professionally printed placards from activists that were distributing them for free. The placards read, “Stop Mass Incarceration. Stop the new Jim Crow.” Police said that it was "unlawful solicitation", even though they were clearly giving them away. When those having their signs seized complained, they were threatened with fines or arrest. I heard one DC police officer say, “Hey, you can get them back at the end of the day. On second thought, given your attitude you cannot. “

I have never seen free placards confiscated at a national gathering by DC police. Then again, I’ve also never seen a demonstration so thickly monitored, with park police, the Department of Homeland Security and the military on every corner.

Current consensus seems to agree that the ever growing police state is very concerned of open rebellion in this country.

How ironic....the abundant police presence at the remembrance of the abundant police violence of those long ago days.

and I felt as tho it was made too difficult to get to the reflecting pool. That said the reporter staatets Then again, I’ve also never seen a demonstration so thickly monitored, with park police, the Department of Homeland Security and the military on every corner. I find that to be a dubious claim. I've seen a far far bigger police presence at the many anti-Iraq war marches that I came to DC to participate. I was at the ACA protests the night congress passed it into law -- MUCH bigger presence.

US park police (there is no DC Park police btw) were all around the area and were actually happy to talk to people and take pictures with the marchers. That was what I saw.

I can't verify what the reporter said as I was not there -- I would like to see a photo. He tweeted it therefore I wonder why a photo wasn't taken. I think that the general sentiment of the speakers is a fair criticism. That is worthy of debate. He said the Box contained about 200 placards. (I believe I saw the ones he was talking about -- but then again I saw many that had different variation of the sentiment: “Stop Mass Incarceration. Stop the new Jim Crow.” )

From the article:

The day was symbolized for me on multiple levels by seeing DC Park police seize 200 professionally printed placards from activists that were distributing them for free. The placards read, “Stop Mass Incarceration. Stop the new Jim Crow.” Police said that it was "unlawful solicitation", even though they were clearly giving them away. "You can get your signs back after the march. Actually, you know what? You can't." - exact quote from DC Park Police officer.

He also tweeted the following around the time of the incident: (bold face mine)

@EdgeofSports 24 Aug
Looks like DC Park Police are seizing placards that are boxed. Leaving those on sticks alone. Advice: pre-staple!

@EdgeofSports 24 Aug
Still can't believe that happened. Printed placards said "End Mass Incarceration. Stop the New Jim Crow" Park Police snatched them.

‏@EdgeofSports 24 Aug
Two people yelled at Park Police for taking placards. Threatened with arrests. They backed down, feeling cowed at event of empowerment.

@EdgeofSports 24 Aug
I wonder if even one sign was seized by police at 1963 March on Washington. I bet not. Most security there were civil rights volunteers.

(side note from me, this is in Todays WaPo's special reporting on the 1963 march, One picture in particular had this as a caption: Army military policemen line up at Washington Monument grounds for duty during the March on Washington. In background are some of the early arrivals for the demonstration. (Associated Press)
)

@EdgeofSports 24 Aug Just one incident... But it was hundreds of printed placards packed in a box. Probably cost $1,000 to print.

@EdgeofSports 24 Aug
Here's deal: park police are cracking down on "solicitation" at MOW. So if you are GIVING AWAY signs or buttons, they will confiscate.

@EdgeofSports 24 Aug
Been coming to big DC demonstrations for half my life. I've never ever seen park police confiscate signs people were giving away.

n ‏@EdgeofSports 24 Aug
I witnessed one ugly incident. I haven't seen anything systematic.

---------------
I really would like to see pictures and maybe reports from the people whose signs were taken and more on why. I;m not saying it didn't happen but there should be more details. I know that I was given a few signs myself --

I was not in DC this weekend, so I am relying only on news articles.

Like you, I feel that the selection of speakers on-stage, and the relative proportion of time allotted to each is the most important issue raised here. However, if the confiscation of signs is substantiated, it would be (yet another - they're becoming practically routine these days) a terrible violation of free speech rights. Distributing signs to protestors fits very neatly into the right to "petition the government for redress of grievance."

Thanks for your on-the-ground-report, Raine1967!

As Attorney General Eric Holder, the person who is not bringing federal civil rights charges against George Zimmerman...

Has a decision been made on the DOJ investigation? I thought that the investigation was ongoing. I do know that Mr. Holder said that it would be a "deliberate" investigation meaning that it would probably be painstakingly slow, but on an issue as important as this I don't blame them for wanting to get all of their ducks in a row first.

Jimmy Carter is right. and so is Naomi Klein- we are seeing the End of America with no privacy and no rights.

Do the marchers plan to fight the taking of the signs in court? They should since they were being handed out and the march was approved.

This is straight up censorship. I am more and more considering leaving for another country after my pets pass away. I have three teaching credentials- it might be time.

STREET SPEECH: YOUR RIGHTS IN WASHINGTON TO PARADE, PICKET, AND LEAFLET

"Wherever the title of streets and parks may apply, they have immemorially been held in trust for the use of the public and, time out of mind, have been used for the purposes of assembly, communicating thoughts between citizens, and discussing public questions."

- Justice Owen I. Roberts (Hague v. CIO, 1939)
Introduction

This pamphlet provides general information about your right to parade, picket, leaflet, circulate petitions and otherwise express your political beliefs in public. It describes the kinds of regulations on speech activities that the government may enforce and the kinds of restrictions which are not permitted by the United States and Washington constitutions.

A general pamphlet cannot cover every possible situation. If after reading this pamphlet you still have questions or concerns, call the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington (ACLU) for more information.
