"As Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org, states in his book, Eaarth, global warming is not some far-off event that we will have to prepare for sometime in the future; it is here today and the effects of global warming are being manifested here today. Yet the oil and gas industry is pulling out all the stops to convince people that global warming is just a myth perpetrated by fuzzy headed liberals.
Extreme weather events, billion dollar weather events, are happening with increasing frequency just as Wall Street analysts are computing Big Oils stock price based on all the assets yet in the ground and which the industry is bound and determined to pump out on its way to becoming part of the atmosphere. If such were to be the case, kiss the earth, as a habitable place for the human species, good-bye."
In his book McKibben states:
global warming is no longer a philosophical threat, no longer a future threat, no longer a threat at all. Its our reality.Weve changed the planet, changed it in large and and fundamental ways. And these changes are far, far more evident in the toughest parts of the globe, where climate change is already wrecking thousands of lives daily. In July 2009, Oxfam released an epic report, Suffering the Science, which concluded that even if we now adopted the smartest possible curbs on carbon emissions, the prospects are very bleak for hundreds of millions of people, most of them among the worlds poorest.

With all his fortune, you think he cares?
No. He doesn't.

(10,745 posts)I mean, there's no question that humanity will be able to adapt to AGW.....in fact, we wouldn't have a choice. But for quite a while, I've suspected that Tillerson's intentions were significantly different than what most people would think of as adaptation......I'm talking about what could be a veiled denial of climate change, just put into coded wording(either that, or he hopes that the worst-case scenarios come true, but the TPTB still survive just fine!).

(46,192 posts)and doubt about any big plans to stop climate change through big actions on our part to reduce emissions?
AverageJoe90
(10,745 posts)Furthermore, if ya bothered to really look, you'd know that I'm wholeheartedly supportive of actual, workable plans to reduce emissions.
This used to be a bit amusing, but now it's just annoying.....I suggest you go find someone else to obsess over, because I'm about done dealing with your shenanigans.

(21,088 posts)Especially in the context of a world that has warmed on average by 10 to 15 degrees F, with the northern Arctic region averaging a warming of 20 to 30 F, and disrupted atmospheric Rossby waves leading to a crippled NH food production system.
Adapt? How? The only way you can postulate adaptation is to deny that such a scenario is possible, and that its probability is rising with every scientific report. Which, I think, is precisely what you do.

(22,666 posts)and leave the rest of us here smoldering and dying. Elysium, anyone?
Space station or none, the rich can buy all the cooling, clean water and health care THEY need. As for the rest of us-not so much. So, yes "they" will adapt.

it's basic science at this point. The deniers, I don't know. Is it, let's all sit around and see if it happens, by then it's to late, or activate some grey matter and learn the science behind it. There's a worldwide community of scientist's to reaffirm the data or we can just trust preacher Grimshaw's sermon in WTF Tennessee.

You can judge the depths of ones consideration for the future by the depths they support the corporate death march.

(24,411 posts)We are broiling here in Iowa. You can barely step outside without feeling sick.
Some schools let out early and outside school sports were cancelled.
The weather forecast predicts 100+ temperatures for the next seven days, and no rain. We had
an extremely wet spring and early summer. We were almost at flood conditions. Then, the rain
stopped. I think we've had rain twice in the last six weeks. We're heading into drought conditions,
similar to the horrible conditions we had last year. Crops (soybeans and corn) are starting to
wither and turn brown.
It's total extremes here. This spring, I was sure we would see flooding again.
The weather is bipolar. Getting through this week is going to be tough for many who don't have
air conditioning.
They're predicting heat indexes of 105-110 degrees this week.

So sad. You either water daily and spend a ton of money doing it---or you just give in to Mother Nature. I love a green lawn, but it was not to be this summer, that is for sure!
The longer the no warming trend gets, the shriller is the propaganda. The multidecadal oscillation changed the trend - we go down now.
