It turns out that MTV has been censoring uses of the word "molly" as a drug reference (including in Miley Cyrus' now infamous VMA performance of "We Can't Stop."
Molly? Really? Is that weed, aka muggles, gage, whacky-tabbacky, reefer, doobage and whatever else we called it back in the 1920s when users of it were called vipers?
(It is said that the hilarious "muggles" was never real, but somehow made it onto a government list of slang terms.)
Cockney rhyming slang for Amphetamine salts? (Moly bolt... salt)?
Or is this some designer drug (or household cleaning product) with a name like molybendum chloride?
To me, Molly was a singer in the band, whose face Desmond liked.
Bag it. I'll just have some purple drank and watch the weather channel with the other fossils.

(421 posts)Ooops, it's Moly, as in Molybdenum.
The only two other Molly's that come to mind is the name Molly and the rock band, Molly Hatchet.
I really am old.

(1,113 posts)MOLLY MALONE.
In Dublin's fair city,
Where the girls are so pretty,
I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone,
As she wheeled her wheel-barrow,
Through streets broad and narrow,
Crying "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!"

(1,113 posts)God bless them. Have you seen the hand print in the jail cell of one of the Mollies? I believe it was Campbell's hand print in Jim Thorpe?

(111,089 posts)The day that America said "Enough!". It is no longer about freedom of expression. It is not about art. It is about the limits of vulgarity. Hannah Montana, once the role model of the young of America, shocked even the most liberal-minded out of their complacent acceptance. She set a precedent for how far not to go. Thanks Miley!

(10,960 posts)It is as much about art as Jim Morrison masturbating on stage was. (An act of self-expression he used to get arrested for.)
Art is art is art. The terms is not reserved for good art, and it must not be.
The fact that taking ecstasy and getting fucked has heavy corporate sponsorship now weirds me out, for sure, but doesn't take it outside the realm of art.
It is a limiting factor, but it is what it is what it is.
I won't slut-shame an individual so I am reluctant to slut-shame an entire culture.
And "Good Golly Miss Molly... sure like to ball" remains a great song despite an evident lack of serious political content.
We rewrite artistic history, forgetting that the top song in the nation was usually something pretty damn lame even back when music was good. I can't make a case that We Won't Stop is more commercial than The Archies' Sugar Sugar, or more politically disappointing than The Ballad of the Green Berets.

(111,089 posts)There is no line that cannot be crossed? We can call anything "art"? There is no such thing as shocking vulgarity? Society has no right to set boundaries on what is "art" and what is not?
That may be true but I believe society will set the boundaries and, as usual, economic factors will determine what is "moral" and what is not.

(2,252 posts)From Wikipedia, MDMA:
MDMA can induce euphoria, a sense of intimacy with others, diminished anxiety, and mild psychedelia. Many studies, particularly in the fields of psychology and cognitive therapy, have suggested MDMA has therapeutic benefits and facilitates therapy sessions in certain individuals, a practice for which it had been formally used in the past. Clinical trials are now testing the therapeutic potential of MDMA for post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety associated with terminal cancer and addiction.
MDMA is criminalized in most countries (though some civil society initiativessuch as the Global Commission on Drug Policyconsider educating the public about the drug more important than curtailing supply) and its possession, manufacture, or sale may result in criminal prosecution. Some limited exceptions exist for scientific and medical research. For 2008, the UN estimated between 10 and 25 million people globally used MDMA at least once in the past year. This was broadly similar to the number of cocaine, amphetamine, and opioid users, but far fewer than the global number of cannabis users. It is taken in a variety of contexts far removed from its roots in psychotherapeutic settings, and is commonly associated with dance parties (or "raves" and electronic dance music.
Regulatory authorities in several locations around the world have approved scientific studies administering MDMA to humans to examine its therapeutic potential and its effects.

(9,610 posts)Ya, kids watch this stuff? 20 somethings? What the fuck?
I mean, I grew up with Madonna and Cher, but they appeared pretty tame compared to this.
edit - Cher and Madonna actually had some talent too. I can not say there was any talent in the video I saw
I am glad that I do not have television at my house.
