(3,922 posts)That marijuana is a "gateway" drug.
...or even a "drug" at all.
It's all about the power from pharma, alcohol, and tobacco that marijuana is still inexplicably a banned substance subject to criminal charges - absolutely insane!
Add in the overwhelming attack from corporate and right-wing America from "drug tests" that detect nothing but marijuana due to it's latency in the system.

(13,184 posts)With its harsh opposition to marijuana law reform, the Obama administration risks losing a few votes to the Greens or the Libertarians. That could make a critical difference.

(5,198 posts)who raise kids, hold down jobs, and do not ever endanger anyone else. We all know people who smoke pot--we are everywhere.
There will always be people who are irresponsible--smokers, drinkers and pill takers, but to deny rights to a society because of some people who misuse does not work. What needs to happen is to make responsible use the norm, and to make clear distinctions of acceptable use, and clear consequences for those who misuse.
Repressive policies in a society create a counterculture, and turn commerce into a black market where violence thrives. A healthy society treats overuse medically and educates people so they can make informed decisions about their own lives.
We have now too many groups in our society that have created a black market to profit off of. They have created an illusion of a functional system of prisons, police, surveillance and international policy that has killed many people and continues to threaten many lives instead of protecting people. They are creating a hell on Earth for too many people.
This war on personal liberty has to stop. We live in the 21st century, and know better how to live a good life. But it will require that people stand their ground and demand to have liberties and rights all over again, to unseat these war mongers from places of power once again. I think we are ready.

(2,424 posts)They are no longer immigrating for job opportunity. They are leaving as refugees from a war zone.
We have a choice. Spend money to accomodate refugees or eliminate the law that creates refugees.

(5,198 posts)Mexico decriminalized drugs not long ago too, I wonder if that changed the dynamic a bit.

(65,616 posts)You need casualties and tragedy and the most you will get out of a stoner is when there are no more cheetos in the bag. Then a 5 hour verbal argument ensues over who has to go to the store to get more. Booze can always ensure violence in the parking lot, drunk driving deaths, domestic violence. Tobacco would probably not kill as many people if it was natural and not filled with industrial waste.
The govt is bass-awakrds in this priority, because they still remember how well it went last time they outlawed our favorite public drug (alcohol). Not very well.
