Instructor who accidentally shot student during gun safety class has history of firearm mishaps

It turns out that Terry Dunlap Sr., the 73-year-old gun safety instructor who earlier this month accidentally shot a student during a class in Lancaster, Ohio, is no stranger to firearm mishaps.

In fact, Dunlap mistakenly shot a 14-year-old girl back in 1977, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

Cathy Schmelzer had to have one of Dunlap’s bullets removed from her leg following a Halloween hayride at which the former Pickerington police department auxiliary lieutenant fired his .38-caliber handgun into the air.

Dunlap, who is certified to instruct Ohio residents applying for their concealed-carry permits, fired his .38-caliber pistol at the tail end of a class in gun handling and safety. The bullet ricocheted off a desk and lodged in Piemonte’s arm.

“Up until he shot me accidentally, it was very informative, very well laid out,” Piemonte told the Columbus Dispatch. “I learned a lot. Then again, I was accidentally shot.”

It is NOT an accident when a gun fires. Does anyone in the world know the definition of an accident? Shouldn't a 'journalist' know the definition?

Accidentally sending a bullet somewhere it isn't supposed to go is nonsense. It ranks up there with another favorite of Americans, something called heartburn. ?????? Another one is someone claiming they were embarassed by someone else. Bullfeathers. One can embarass him/herself, but a stupid or thoughtless act by you does not embarass me. Do I have to say it? It embarasses you. Give me a break.

I am starting to get on my own nerves. I promise not to post on the subject of 'accidents' again. Thank you Jesus for finally getting through to me that I wasting my time. Dumbing down complete. I give up.

I laugh, and cringe, when the NRA talks about starting teaching gun safety to youngsters. "One is never too young to learn how to handle guns safely, blah, blah, blah". What they are really talking about is indoctrination and brainwashing designed to make sure the 2nd amendment to the Consitution continues to say exactly what they want it to and not what the people who wrote it meant.

My dad started teaching me about gun safety when I was 10 years old. My military service provided a little more, although, when my abandon ship station at sea was to prevent anxious passengers and crew from storming the deck where the life rafts were secured, I was handed an M1. It was the first time I had ever held an M1.

As far as starting gun safety instruction at a young age, everyone knows as soon as the dad, or other instructor's back is turned, the youngster will do exactly what he has been told and rigorously follow all the instructions he has been given. HA! Or was I the only who ever took my dad's revolver and pretended to play Russian Roulette. No one else was home and I didn't aim the gun at myself, but I did put a bullet throuh my mom's sewing machine. Got away with it. I finally owned up to it, but not to my mom. Well, gotta go. Time to clean my assault rifles and my new .50 cal. sniper rifle. There went my kid's college fund, but some things are just too important to be ................ and so on like that. Bye.

It reminds me of the old joke, "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?"

I don't think these situations should be considered accidents, especially when they happen at the hands of people who claim to have the credentials to teach gun safety to others.
