... They actually mean "Support the war! Or we'll label you as a dirty commie hippy who spits at soldiers!"
And you know what I say? Fuck the toddler-killing chickenhawks and their yellow ribbon bumper stickers!

(1,799 posts)And since I have family in every branch of our military (as well as friends), I don't appreciate the fuck the yellow ribbons comments. I agree with fuck the chicken hawks but you may want to rethink the rest.
I served and I support those who volunteer to serve our country, as well as all those who have served in the past. I don't feel the same way about the civilians who order them into harm's way.

(26,355 posts)They're designed to bamboozle people into thinking they're being kind and supportive to people going into harms way, but really, it's a tool that's used to demand conformity from those who aren't playing along with the drumbeat to war. A society with yellow ribbons everywhere is a psychological signal to anti-war people to sit down and shut up, and to acquiesce to the latest war, or mass-bombing, or whatever. Those yellow ribbons actually say "Support the war, or you're an asshole!"
Besides, do those yellow ribbons really support the troops? How many times have you seen SUVs with those yellow ribbon stickers drive past a homeless vet trying to get money for the next meal? They don't support the troops, they just make you think you're supporting the troops, when you're actually supporting the war, while the troops are thrown under the bridge when their enlistment's up.

(1,799 posts)My cousin did 2 tours in Iraq as a Marine and his parents weren't worried about whether or not you or others supported the war, they cared about their son coming home. And FYI they didn't support the war!
There's a house next to my kids school that had a yellow ribbon on every tree in their yard until last spring when they added a HUGE welcome home sign for their son. I don't know them personally but it brought tears to my eyes and I'd bet they couldn't care less about your opinion about the war either.
I marched against the war in Iraq with my 2 little boys behind me in a wagon they helped decorate so I guess what you believe the yellow ribbons represent doesn't fly with me. I don't support unnecessary wars but I always support our husbands, wives, sisters, brothers, moms and dads who serve.

(154,021 posts)With family in the service, blue stars work, not the cheap, made in China, yellow ribbons many put in their cars since they support the troops. Find out how much money Wally World made out of them.
And I sport military decals on my vehicles, I got a dependent card in my wallet, my husband is a retired chief, who did two back to back tours after 911. His first 911 patrol started before 911, and i live in a not so much military town, as it used to be, but it still has a significant presence.
I have special words for those chicken hawks who believe ll they need to do is put a yellow ribbon on their cars. It s them who destroyed the meaning

(1,799 posts)There's a big difference between those who actually support the troops and/or have loved ones serving and those that just support them as a political statement (or a business move for that matter.). It just seems to me the OP is lumping them all together. We can show support for our soldiers and their families and still passionately disagree with acts of war.
I don't think they destroy the meaning of the yellow ribbons as there are plenty of Americans that truly support them ie don't want endless war and want them taken care of financially and physically/mentally when they come home. I won't allow the right wing define that anymore than I let them define liberal or democrat. They need to be reminded that wrapping themselves in a flag doesn't make them patriots.

(26,355 posts)I'm not questioning the sincerity of those that put those stickers up to support a family member who's in the armed forces and serving in a conflict. To them, and to you, it means "Support the troops."
But for the Bushies, neo-cons and PNAC groupies who had those stickers printed out, their idea was to conflate "Support the troops" with "Support the war", specifically to alienate and isolate those who opposed the war. They want anyone who opposes the war caricatured as a "hippy that spits on the troops".
And that's why I don't like those stickers.

(20,600 posts)Those yellow ribbons are saying exactly that. I would wager 10-1 most of the time it is right wingers who put those on their cars, to show their faux patriotism. Unless it says "Support our troops, and then underneath that - By bringing them home and stopping the wars"
