Nixon came up against Voorhis in a congressional election in California in 1946. Voorhis was the incumbent. Nixon, a man of overweening ambition, realised that he just had to be got out of the way by hook or by crook. He decided to smear him as a communist the most reviled political species in America at that time. It worked. And this, by all accounts, very able representative was lost to pubic life.
In his later post-Watergate reflective phase Nixon was to remark:
Of course I knew Jerry Voorhis wasnt a communist but I had to win the election.
Similarly, will Obama be saying, in his twilight years, with respect to the 2008 primary cycle:
Of course I knew Hillary Clinton wasnt a racist but I had to win the election.
