What is the goal?
I haven't posted on Syria until today since a major argument on the red line speech. I hadn't planned on speaking again, but IMHO one question isn't being asked or answered.
President Obama says we are not going for regime change. So what are we doing? In other words what is our goal?
If we are bombing to punish Assad, then can't that punishment be levied with sanctions and embargoes? We could probably get UN support on that without too much arm twisting. Otherwise we are bombing to punish Assad by killing his people to teach him a lesson that it is wrong to kill his people.
If we are bombing to destroy the chemical weapons, it is almost certain we will release a vast amount of them which will kill anyone downwind. Also, if they have the College Chemical student level formulas, it won't be hard to make more. So that doesn't make any sense.
The only way to make sure Assad doesn't make more is to remove Assad, which would change the regime, which we said we wouldn't do.
I don't understand our goals. I do not understand how we define victory. If there is no goal, no victory, why are we bombing again?
Because from here, I'm not seeing a whiole lot of clear thinking.
