At Lincoln's feet

At Lincoln’s feet
we gather as a people rejoicing in the
equality that spans our diversity.

We revel in the colorful spectrum of
hands joined in common purpose
and shared gratitude.

We marvel at how far we have come
as we gird ourselves for the
journey that remains.

We treasure the blessing of many
shoulders to help carry the burdens.

We cherish the voices that offer
different notes and thereby bring
harmony to our song.

We mingle tears of remembrance
with smiles of continuing hope.


And at Lincoln’s feet we lament the
absence of those who have chosen not
to walk this walk with us; their sorrow is
great, for they could have chosen
brotherhood instead.
