Interesting social temp. check. None of the women in my wife's quilt group want to see "The Butler".

Various reasons given, such as - "it is just propaganda that will make "those people" (their words) angry again"

"I would never go see a movie with Jane Fonda in it"

"All that movie will do is open old wounds".

My wife told them it was an incredibly moving, important movie about an issue that persists to this day (being in NC, that is a no-brainer of course), and that everyone should educate themselves. (they think my wife is quite a whacko.) And, yes, these are all women who attend church regularly and see themselves as good people doing good things.

Not all churches or beliefs reinforce bigotry, but it seems the resurgence of overt racism and bigotry is being strongly supported and cultivated in certain denominations.

Sickening.

3. Yeah, a FB 'friend' made the Fonda remark. 'Well-meaning ladies of a certain age...' Right?

Loooooved The Help though - right? I have some strong feelings on the book and movie and I tend to fall write in line with Melissa Harris-Perry on that one. Your wife should nudge them with - *all innocent and wide eyed* - "But! But! It shows the good old days when they were butlers!"

Not because of it's subject matter, but because of the type of movie it is. Big well meaning Hollywood dramas generally don't work for me. I'm more interested in Fruitvale Station, but more than anything I'm kind of burnt out on going to the movies (as I often get around August and September).

IMO hollywood's best films are usually thrillers, sci-fi, war movies, crime dramas etc. I'm usually disappointed by the comedies. The big message movies like this one tend to crank the cheese factor to 11. That just doesn't work for me.

Ill probably check it out when it gets to HBO.

16. Perhaps 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' will renew your interest in movies?

Of course that won't be released until Christmas.

so i'm burnt out now -but i'll probably craving to go in october or so - and will see the least terrible looking movie in theaters. Then of course late october and into november through christmas is the other block of good movies (the smart block, as opposed to summers dumb block).

edited to add - the secret life of walter mitty does look pretty amazing though.

I long ago gave up seeing movies that validate what I already know and believe.

It sounds like a great movie with great performances but I can't say I'd learn anything from it. Perhaps it's just me but I think most people want to see movies that transport them into different perspectives. The people who need to see 'The Butler' are those who will scoff and refuse to see it.

Movies like 'The Butler' rarely draw as many eyeballs as the critics proclaim.

we never talked politics much and if conversations seemed to be headed in that direction I would point out that if our group was put in charge of lawmaking we'd almost certainly be able to work together and compromise…. so maybe the problem are those who agitate and spew venom.
