The blue collar workers in this country are probably at their weakest point in 75 years? Union membership has dwindled to about 10% or less of the total workforce.
These fast food workers should be commended for their courage in challenging their employers. They are the modern day "coal miners" who knew they needed their paychecks more than anyone, but nonetheless, were willing to take a stand against the owners.
These workers are not asking too much from their employers. These folks are making humongous profits for their officers and shareholders, even as they hold their employee pay to less than $8.00 per hour. A decent pay increase to the workers would put none of the owners in any type of hardship. It would be good for everyone in our economy.
What company would advertise open positions that paid less than McDonalds? If these fast food workers are successful, it will drive up wages across the board. This is good. We should stand behind them and give them all the support we can.

(994 posts)The boss exploits them. The government ignores them. Their fellow workers in other industries look down on them.
So they are taking matters into their own hands and the thought of these proud, defiant workers on the picket line gives me hope!

(110,950 posts)They need to know that they are appreciated. If they can get the minimum wage increased to $12 per hour, it will be a good victory.

(14,524 posts).. but don't expect much support from today's "new and improved" Democratic Party.
It's become quite clear which side of improving the lives of workers issue they stand.

(36,814 posts)We are basically subsidizing fast food restaurants with public assistance for their employees so they can sell high-caloric, low-nutritional value garbage to the masses which inevitably indirectly increases public health care costs. How stupid is that?

(9,696 posts)Union membership has not "dwindled" away. Unions were the target of aggressive tactics to destroy them. Saying "dwindled" makes it sound like they are an old institution that no one needs any more.
Other than that, I agree with your post. Sorry to be picky about a word.

(511 posts)Should be behind fast food workers. Our "leaders" are quite effective at playing different groups against one another.
Divide and conquer is their true master's philosophy.

(110,950 posts)I guess the remaining workers will have to prove their loyalty by working twice as hard?
