According to this poll from Huff Post, Obama striking Syria would be without much public support. On DU, I'd assume it's much less than 25%.
I hope he takes no military action anytime soon, and preferably not at all. I believe a rush to war without compelling and absolute evidence, support from a majority of US citizens, and participation from other countries in the UN would be a sea change moment. It could forever erode President's support at home and his place in history.
Getting out of Shrub's war in Iraq was one of the main winning points in his election.
This "Decider in Chief" talk is now too reminiscent of Shrub's behavior and I dearly hope President Obama respects the will of We The People and slow the fuck down on the rush to war. Not doing so will have BIG political consequences, just not sure how it would manifest?
Would a large faction of our President's own party rally against him? Or all Americans from any party? Speaking as someone who enthusiastically voted twice for Obama, I would not hesitate to speak out against such foolhardy action.

(22,560 posts)And the whole country is against a strike against Syria. So if he does this, he's doing it alone. I can't believe we're marching into war again. This is ludicrous. This just like the stupid blunder against Iraq. Only worse.

(7,228 posts)Will not walk the same irrational path as Shrub & Shooter. He's smarter than that, or so I hope!

(23,220 posts)If he really took a "shot across the bow" and that was that, and the Syrian civil war continue on its path, then perhaps the impact would be limited. But I find that this would not be the likely outcome. Once US missiles (not NATO, not UN, not Arab League, but US) are fired, there is a logic that the superpower owns the conflict now. That could lead to disaster politically.
