General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsGlenn Greenwald's Partner Was Carrying A Stunning Amount Of Sensitive Documents When He Was Detained
Some of the key points:
- Robbins said that the case material included 58,000 documents that were "highly classified UK intelligence documents."
- Among the documents was a piece of paper with the decryption password.
- Police decrypted one file on Miranda's hard drive with the password.
- The material contains "personal information that would allow British intelligence staff to be identified," including overseas.
- Because of the size and scope of the material gathered, the British government believes that Edward Snowden "indiscriminately appropriated material in bulk."
- In what could be a particularly troubling development, the UK government has "had" to assume that Snowden's data is in the hands of foreign governments to which he has traveled: Hong Kong and Russia. (Greenwald told Business Insider last week that it was "highly unlikely" that had happened, however.)
- Robbins argued that it is "impossible" for Greenwald or any other journalist to determine which information could damage national security.

(19,429 posts)We are pleased that the Claimant has withdrawn his attempt to restrict our continued access to, and use of, material that was seized from him at Heathrow airport on Sunday 18 Aug 2013 under Schedule 7.
The examination of this material is necessary for the purposes of an ongoing criminal investigation and to protect public safety.
An initial examination of the seized material has identified highly sensitive material within thousands of classified intelligence documents. As previously stated the Metropolitan Police Service Counter Terrorism Command is now carrying out a criminal investigation, which is at an early stage.
The Counter Terrorism Command nowadays has as part of its portfolio the functions of the former Met police Special Branch, which was tasked to work with the intelligence and security services on espionage cases among other things.
It will not escape Reg readers' consideration that while the Guardian's security may have been poor, it was the US and UK governments' security regimes which allowed the information to escape in the first place.

(55,894 posts)he was offered a lawyer but didn't trust them. Then story #3. Miranda had a lawyer in hour 8 of detention.
So what happened is Miranda WAS offered a lawyer, didn't trust him and it took 8 hours for his own lawyer to arrive.
VASTLY different than "Miranda denied lawyer".
Mojorabbit
(16,020 posts)Not getting your lawyer till 8 hours into the detention could be interpreted during that time period as being denied your council. Headlines evolved as the situation evolved. There does not seem to be anything nefarious about that info unless one has an agenda.

(62,265 posts)From what I can tell the file that the password went to may have actually been deleted on the laptop. They might not have realized it could be recovered. Basically that the password wasn't to the flash drives, naturally, but an encrypted file on the flash drives. If true it could be that a double layer of security bit them in the butt, since you can undelete files.

Remember the Guardians first reports about the UK government detaining Glenn Greenwalds partner David Miranda, and how Greenwald said Miranda had been denied a lawyer?
Then, the next day, the Guardians story changed. In this article they write that Miranda refused a lawyer because he didnt trust the UK: David Miranda: They Said I Would Be Put in Jail if I Didnt Co-Operate.
He was offered a lawyer and a cup of water, but he refused both because he did not trust the authorities.

@ggreenwald: Anyone claiming that David Miranda was carrying a password that allowed access to documents is lying. UK itself says they can't access them.
@ggreenwald: @MichaelKelleyBI Good encryption requires multiple passwords, not just one. That pw allows no access to documents, period.
