Syria proposes 'WMD-free zone'

Syria has asked the UN Security Council to help transform the Middle East into a "zone free of weapons of mass destruction".

Accused by the United States of developing chemical weapons, Syria insists it is not doing so but charges that Washington is ignoring Israel, which is widely assumed to have nuclear weapons.

Syria has circulated a draft resolution in the 15-nation Security Council, welcoming all initiatives to create a "zone free of weapons of mass destruction, in particular nuclear weapons".

But the US ambassador to the UN, John Negroponte, says Syria is jumping the gun.

"We think the focus at the moment is the search for WMD in Iraq," he said. ......

2. We were pretty abusive of Syria at the time

And the funny thing is, they were torturing people for us!

That said, they had to absorb a lot of the Iraq refugees and they were a sane voice back then. I always felt like we missed an opportunity there in favor of what the PNACers wanted for their invasion plans.

4. Good historical reference.

These calls from developing countries are always completely ignored by the big powers. And the Western big powers of course ignore Russia and China as best they can. Seems like resurrecting MAD (mutually-assured destruction) as the operative principle in international affairs is the only thing to restore any semblance of order to the world.
