The Ed Show, Sharpton, and Tweety steadily builds an audience and as soon as Chris Hayes comes on the ratings start falling. Chris Hayes has a downward effect on the shows after his.

(8,142 posts)Giving him his own show seemed like a desperate mistake. Just plug anybody in a time slot with hopes of getting ratings.

(8,462 posts)He's like some on here. On the left side of the power structure, so closely sucked up to it that there isn't any space between it and him.
yeah, he's thoughtful and makes some good points, but those points always wind up supporting the existing power structure, even if it's the left side of the power structure.

(22,875 posts)And he has not got his mojo back since he moved to the 1 hour evening stint.. It is his communication style..it works best in a longer format.. and the fact that he and Rachael are pretty similar in style.. its not working for him

(103,856 posts)He shines in a long-format, freewheeling style. The hour-long format is too chopped up, and lots of time is wasted on frivolous filler stuff..

(22,875 posts)He (Chris Hayes) was just great in that long format in getting discussions past the hair on fire moment that so many other news ? commentary programs do..
And the guy who is on now.. (having a senior moment here.. can' think of his name) was so much better on The Cycle.. he was such a nice balance.
MSNBC took something that was working, and instead of letting these programs come to a wonderful fruition.. they split them up..
We have been TV less for a couple of weeks.. and one of the things I do miss on Saturday morning is the longer format programs for discussion.. They are without a doubt my favorites when we do watch TV

(32,886 posts)I certainly cannot say I have it figured out. I'll do a show (mine is radio of course) that to me doesnt seem particularly spectacular and it will get 100,000 listens. Then I will do one that IMHO should go through the roof, like my Genocide show back in April, and 18,000 people will listen.
As I said, I will not pretend I have this figured out at all.

(45,319 posts)Hayes-678,000 total
He is followed by Rachel who gets-727,000. She is not dragged down by the previous show, her numbers are up over it. However she is followed by
Larry O'Donnell-555,000 a big drop from both Hayes and Rachel
Sharpton shows 624,000 so he beats Larry, but not Chris or Rachel if that's what we are doing here. It is not a comparison I'd make, but you are.
Chris Matthews-799,000 takes the day. DU says 'I hate Tweety' but he gets the big numbers....
itsrobert
(14,157 posts)Hayes is a primetime show and should be building audience off Tweety. His numbers are down. Rachel's numbers should be in the 900,000s, but because of Hayes her numbers struggle. And O'Donnel has a replacement host this week.
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)This is also part of why Al's numbers are low, he's on at 3pm in the West, then 6 which is high competition with network news, each of which draw millions of viewers.
Can you cite for me Rachel's highest ratings and when she got them? Or are you just riffing here?
itsrobert
(14,157 posts)But the truth of the matter is that the East 8pm/Central 7pm primetime is much more important to advertisers. Rachel was in the the 900K to 1.3 million range just last year.
Here is a link, she is in over 1.7 million:

(45,319 posts)And even if that absurdity were true, it sill does not make Chris and Al's shows 'Primetime' when they are afternoon shows in HALF the country. A 'decent sized audience'?
Rachel has hit a few high points during big news cycles. The link you offer shows numbers for the night of a Presidential Debate. So she does better with Barack Obama as her lead in man, imagine that!

(14,157 posts)a non-repeat of Tweety is better than the second airing. Plus 10 o'clock hour declines across the board in cable news. Not everyone stays up past 10pm.

(10,942 posts)MSNBC that goes after rightwing talkers immediately on the air. Lawrence also does a good job of taking on rightwing mouthpieces real time.
I have found that many members here on DU lack the strategic sense to understand who are their allies and who are enemies. Chris Matthews is a friend and a reliable supporter for progressive causes, DU can think whatever it wants, but night after night, Matthews largely proves my point.

(3,605 posts)He is one of my favorites - very smart, very progressive and passionate. Those combinations don't always go over too well, and it's a damn shame.
He and Rachel are the best on MSNBC, imo.
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)The weakest draws are Larry O'Donnell and Al Sharpton. In Al's case his numbers are hurt, like Hayes, by being on in the afternoon in the Western portion of the country.

(19,841 posts)The early 3 shows are for those who like the direct style of Fox (but not the content).
The later 3 shows are for the pointy-headed liberals. More in-depth analysis. A slower time of the evening.
Tweety's a little more liberal these days and has good guests but I don't like his rabid foaming at the mouth style, and O'Donnell leaves me cold (jumped the shark awhile ago IMO).
Ed is accessible and fine for a good discharge of passion (but he lost me on the NSA). Ed is good for that early slot--my MIL watches him exclusively, as an alternative to Fox. Watches none of the others on MSNBC. She tells her friends to watch Ed, not Fox.
--I like the combination of Hayes--->Rachel. I also like Melissa. Hayes is doing a good job IMO.

Seems to me there's something for everybody on MSNBC these days.

(2,667 posts)Could it possibly be that the audience is just to fucking stupid to understand the things he is telling them? Its not a matter that he has to go, its a matter that we need one hell of a lot more like him. If it was TV that dummied down this country it just might be that TV has the power to smarten us back up. Chris Hayes would be just the person to do it too.
