As a privately-held company that only acknowledged diversity because it was forced to do so by the realities of its hugely lucrative Star Wars, LEGO has a long tradition of acting way behind the curve. Readers might recall that LEGO had a strict and inviolable "no weapons" rule, which they quickly abandoned when they realized that this principled stance was negatively impacting the bottom line.

Kudos for this small step forward, but it's nothing more than a cynical marketing ploy by a cynical corporation.

It's not as though they resemble actual people in anything like an anatomically-correct way, so it's just a question of the plastic hairstyle, and that can be made to be either ambiguous, or detachable (which they usually are). It's a bit silly to draw a breast-line on these very geometric "people".
