Nascar car crashed into jet engine track dryer. Huge fire

Last edited Tue Feb 28, 2012, 12:16 AM - Edit history (3)

There was jet fuel on fire on the track.

What a crazy incident. The race was on a yellow flag. A race car was passing a track dryer which contains a jet engine and jet fuel. The car had some sort of problem, lost control and slammed into the jet dryer. The dryer exploded and the race car was destroyed. Jet fuel leaked onto the track and was pouring down the track on fire. Thankfully the fire was put out and everyone is OK.

The driver was Juan Pablo Mantoya.

The purpose of life is to enjoy oneself. If some people enjoy the sport, then for them NASCAR gets to the heart of what it means to be alive.

But I guess you are too busy doing important stuff like feeding orphan children to have any time for such enjoyment.

The race is essentially OVER after the qualifying,
and the team with the Most Money usually qualifies on the Poll.
Actually passing someone on the track in an F1 race is a rare event.

Now if you want to talk "boring", there is GOLF.
It is hard for me to understand HOW someone can play Golf for entertainment,
but is beyond my comprehension WHY someone would watch it on TV!

Even you must admit that driving a Cup Car on the track in Daytona would be exciting,
even if you were the only car on the track, and nobody was in the stands.

they had to postpone it from yesterday. Had they tried to run under the lights last night they would have been up against the Academy Awards and been running into the wee hours of the morning. They started the race when it quit raining today and the track was dry....I'm sure there was no intent to maliciously pre-empt the finale of House.

Seems dumb to have it as 'standard' with cars whizzing passed them:

The NASCAR announcers said it's standard procedure for the jet dry trucks to come out on the track during a caution.

had reported a vibration in all gears......there was something wrong with the car but they hadn't been able to find anything definite when he was in the pits. I'm sure there will be an investigation. Montoya was lucky he didn't end up torched.

The track crew did a great job of getting the track cleaned up.

Montoya lost all control of the car after he left the pits during a caution. He has won F-1 races and the Indy 500 along with NASCAR races, so he is NOT some incompetent driver. When something under the car is about to break, there is only so much a pit crew or driver can do under caution to find the problem until the damn thing finally fails. In this case, the part failed and he lost control just as he approached the jet dryer.

Oh, and Montoya is from Columbia and has raced all over the world in carts, open wheel, and stock cars. He won his first NASCAR race back when they ran the road course in Mexico City.

all these opinions on how it's nothing but cars turning left make it obvious they know nothing about it.

Montoya is a helluva a driver. Let's face it, no matter who we like and don't like, they are all pretty damn good drivers to be running around a track at almost 200 mph just inches away from each other.

Jimmie Johnson sure took a hard hit when he went into the wall....sad he got knocked out of the race so early. It was good to see Junior running well, though.

Asphalt machines really do not work well at the angles of the curves. They had to hold them up on the high banks with cranes.. Torching up the asphalt may require a patch....

I went to one race there. My son was in the scouts and because of their community service work, got a free father-son day. It is amazingly loud and amazingly fast sitting up next to the wall. This is something you can't really get a true feel for seeing them on TV. Once was enough for me, but it was a good bit more impressive than I expected.
