Metro Detroit's Middle Eastern community reacts to Obama's speech
As President Bararck Obama described in detail Tuesday night the pain and torture that victims of Syrias most recent chemical weapons attack faced, Dr. Yahya Basha of West Bloomfield couldnt help but weep.
I had tears in my eyes hearing his description of the horrors that (Syrian President Bashar Assad) inflicted, said Basha, who has worked to get rid of Assad for decades. I could not help it. I love the heart of the president (Obama). I trust his heart. He has so much passion describing the feelings he had for those children being gassed...gasping for breath and foaming at the mouth. So painful and tragic.
<...>
Osama Siblani, publisher of the Dearborn-based Arab-American News and an opponent of U.S. military action in Syria, praised Obama for considering the Russian deal that would stop any U.S. strike. In his speech, Obama said the evidence is clear the Syrian government used chemical weapons, but Sibalni said he wasnt convinced.
I was waiting for Obama to bring evidence to the table, Siblani said. He didnt. He brought rhetoric.
<...>
Anas Fattahi, Dearbon, 54, a Syrian-American, liked the speech, saying Obama was simple, clear, and direct to help Americans understand the tragedy the Syrian peopel have gone through.
