By Alex Seitz-Wald on Feb 29, 2012 at 5:50 pm
Following up on last weeks contraception hearing, the House Judiciary Committee held another hearing yesterday afternoon on the subject, which featured the rantings of Rep. Steve King (R-IA). In a lengthy screed against the Obama administrations contraception rule, King scoffed at the progress made in womens rights over the passed 60 years and suggested that Connecticut had a right to ban contraception in the landmark Griswold v. Connecticut:
KING: Why should I care about the conclusions that have been brought forward by the Supreme Court if we can race from 1965, Connecticut having a Tenth Amendment right to establish a policy, a Supreme Court that creates a right to privacy thats the foundation for mandated abortion, and here were are discussing whether were going to mandate everybody in America fund and provide that contraceptives. Why should I care?

The Griswold decision overturned a law in Connecticut that prohibited the use of birth control, even for married couples, but King apparently thinks the state had a right to enforce that ban.
ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos raised this very issue during a GOP presidential debate in January and was roundly pilloried by conservatives. George, this is an unusual question youre asking, Mitt Romney replied and suggested that nobody was seriously considering outlawing contraceptives. Kings answer, however, would suggest otherwise.

(461 posts)On the brightside, I got to meet his Democratic challenger last week. Her name is Christie Vilsack, Tom Vilsack's wife. I think she can give him a run for his money since the districts were redrawn before this election. Here's to hoping!

(461 posts)and it is where Iowa State Univ. happens to be. I think that may help Vilsack. Plus, the fact that Ames is another population center in the district helps as well.

(18,775 posts)I don't believe there is anything genuine in this issue. Next they'll be arguing the roundness of the planet. Seriously.
This has got to be some sort of stupid strategy. I refuse to believe that anyone who can tie their own shoes is arguing against birth control.

(2,286 posts)Lots of GOP women also use contraception. On some level, the abortion issue makes sense -- not that I agree with them in any way, but this talk of banning contraception is insane. Do they really think that women will just walk away from the freedom and independence they have achieved?
