Charge filed in 2009 stray-bullet killing of Kansas woman after Starlight Theater show

A Kansas City man was charged Friday in the killing of a woman struck by a bullet while driving home from Starlight Theater in 2009, according to online Jackson County court records.

Calah D. Johnson, 32, was charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with second-degree murder in the killing of Deanna L. Lieber, an attorney who served as general counsel for the Kansas State Department of Education.

Johnson, who is currently serving a 20-year federal prison sentence for cocaine trafficking, was also charged Friday with discharging a firearm into a motor vehicle. A bond of $500,000 was set, according to Jackson County court records.

Lieber, 45, of rural Lawrence, had just attended a show the night of July 17, 2009, with her 13-year-old daughter and her mother-in-law. They were driving on Bruce R. Watkins Drive at 59th Street when a bullet struck Lieber.
