Rep. Jared Polis mocks Colorados new DEA chief
Democratic Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado on Wednesday poked fun at his states new head drug enforcement agent, joking that the Drug Enforcement Agencys new motto was protecting America from mold and water damage.
Barbra Roach, the chief of Denvers Drug Enforcement Administration, recently told the Denver Post that medical marijuana was dangerous because it caused mold and water damage in the homes of people who grew it.
Thats just a very strange thing to say, Polis wrote on Facebook. No doubt that some idiots have flooded their basements growing marijuana. No doubt that some idiots have flooded their basements growing tomatoes. I stained my tiles in my living room last year growing narcissus. Ok. So for this we need a federal cop busting people?
The fact that an opponent of medical marijuana uses arguments like it causes water damage to homes shows how bankrupt that side is of facts, he added.
Polis has previously called for an end to the war on drugs, proposing legislation to eliminate funding for the Office of National Drug Control Policy and other bills.

(149,641 posts)Unbelievable that the head of the DEA in Colorado would make such an argument. It's really stupid.

(36,988 posts)I have noted many times how he said it was up to the states and the states have the right for medical MJ before his election.
But his DEA is going gang busters on medical MJ in fact Colorado is now on his shit list.
Although Colorado has legalized medical marijuana, those who distribute the drug still risk running afoul of federal law. The Obama administrations Department of Justice has made a practice of not prosecuting medical marijuana patients in states where the drug has been approved, but it still considers distributors to be fair game for arrest.
In January, U.S. Attorney John Walsh sent letters to 23 medical marijuana dispensaries in Colorado, warning them that they faced legal repercussions if they did not close down within 45 days.
He needs to change MJ from a schedule I drug like President Carter Advocated to Congress .

(20,453 posts)I didn't realize Carter did that.

Dealers skirting the law? In spades.
Sure, lots of "non-profit" shops with millions in the bank are complaining of persecution.
If you examine the above sentences, it's not that complicated.

roody
(10,849 posts)spent hundreds of hours crafting and passing an ordinance to regulate medical mj. It was just abandoned since the feds have raided pot farms that went through the rigorous approval process.

(16,588 posts)25 plants, and 2 lbs processed, maximum, per patient served, *and* no more than 25 plants on any single parcel of land, (for an indoor grow, you can use 100 sq. ft.), and the plants cannot be visible from public or private roads (etc etc.)

That's not a farm, it's a tiny greenhouse, or a garage. So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the feds *and* locals raided pot farms, as those aren't legal there, according to the local laws.
roody
(10,849 posts)They could have 99 plants before the feds started raiding. The feds raided legal grows.

(13,409 posts)Which is exactly the kind of bullshit that Obama promised to stop. But he was lying his ass off. And he lost quite a few supporters for that. You can defend this lying bullshit all you want. Not many buy what you're shoveling.

(13,409 posts)He said that his DOJ would NOT be targeting MMJ facilities. He didn't say ANYTHING about whether this was applicable just to non-profits. Marijuana is illegal by federal law, PERIOD. We're not discussing legalities, we're discussing whether or not Obama can be trusted to keep his word. With his DoJ going crazy on MMJ facilities, we can be sure that his word is pretty much only used to garner political points. He's not trustworthy.
boppers
(16,588 posts)States have non-profit laws, distance from public parks laws, worker payment laws (etc.) and MMJ doesn't get exempted from all state and federal laws solely because of the product they sell.
Care to offer an example of a place busted for 100% legal MMJ sales?
Or perhaps, point me to where Obama said that you can commit federal tax evasion (or any crime, for that matter), without fear of arrest or prosecution, as long as you have a MMJ storefront?
EOTE
(13,409 posts)So when he said that he wouldn't target them for prosecution, he meant just that.
Extremely few of these dispensaries are being targeted for tax evasion, almost to a T, they're being prosecuted because they dispense MMJ. Almost all of the dispensaries are being targeted because they're breaking FEDERAL LAW.
Obama was full of shit, I can't believe there are some here who are still defending this egregious action.

(5,198 posts)This is like trying to debate with an annoying child. The establishment in this country says anything just to keep doing what they're doing, and do not care if it makes no sense, as if they are just buying more time.
"Oh let's run this nonsense up the flagpole and see how long it flies."
Can we PLEASE have a discussion with some real adults that care?

(6,036 posts)Trying to turn a residence into a Hidden Hot-House will cause Mold and Humidity damage. Not to mention that it accompanies theft of thousands of dollars in electricity. But that is because one is trying to Hide it. An aluminum framed glass greenhouse could properly do all of that with the exception of keeping itself hidden from the authorities.
But we can't end prohibition. The drug cartels would have to build a new Vegas if we did that.
snooper2
(30,151 posts)There was minimal water/mold damage from the grow up, just a little mold on some exposed drywall from watering.
When they started getting into it the whole damn house was a mold trap before the grow op was even there LOL. You never know what you find when you start peeling those walls back.

(6,036 posts)Thought it was the Industrial Humidifiers that caused the mold behind the Drywall. Don't remember anything about it being there before the grow-op started.
