Rick Mason, a program management analyst who is a civilian with the U.S. Navy, told the Associated Press that a gunman was shooting from a fourth floor overlook in the hallway outside his office. He said the gunman was aiming at people in the buildings first floor cafeteria.
Boy, depending on what that means...

(24,689 posts)Its a bit freaky around here at the moment. There are suspects at large. It kind of reminds me of the "sniper" days.

Yes, it is a bit like the sniper days. Ugh!

I'll admit I haven't been following this except for here on DU, but in the fog and confusion of a crisis, 95% of the breaking news turns out to be false.

(12,671 posts)Not weapons that are easy to hide. That's what is even more concerning.
And it's not just a matter of getting past the Navy Yard gate guard, park and hop in, and then get past a guard at a desk; there are areas where they also need cards with an entry code to get through the security door, especially in the upper floors. Perhaps not in the more open perimeter walkways (or "overlooks" , but inside, where they could get protection to continue their rampage from the police or other LEOs.
Bldg. 197 is a warren of cement offices, where there's a lot of blocked angles and cover to move around in. There were easier places to "hit" in the Yard, but not many are as easy to stay protected in. I've been there before.
I'm pretty sure these people knew exactly where they were and had planned their movements well in advance.

(18,402 posts)these two guys were not thought to be members of the military but were wearing military-style uniforms. So don't jump to conclusions. In fact, everything may be wrong at this point.
